When they had an actual fabric department (as opposed to general crafts), and an employee always in it, I used to buy fleece for tied blankets at WalMart. Since that's been gone, I haven't bought any. Not worth the time and trouble to find somebody three departments over to try to help. I am a little surprised they haven't gone with self-service, as it seems that is the current game plan for so many stores, but how would they make sure people were putting the right skew number in? Unless they sold all fabric at the same price, people would use a cheaper priced fabric's skew.

I called the number and the guy I talked to said they didn't know anything about the fabric dept closing, had not heard about it. So everybody get on and call the number and let them know what you have been told, maybe we will be able to stop this before it happens.

I needed some thread to sew a button on a coat so looked while I was at Walmart. No heavy duty and very few colors of what thread they did have. This is one of their newer super stores and I couldn't find thread! Department was a mess but lots of fabric on bolts. As for the thread -- Joann's didn't have any either.

If very few people buy fabric there, not much point in WalMart keeping it in stock.
I loooovvveeed their fabric departments when they were well stocked - before their first closings of the fabric departments. I frequently found good quality fabric then.

Our WM used to have a great fabric selection, now just so-so. However 2 others within 15 miles of me still have large well-stocked depts. I suppose a lot does depend on demand from the locals. One has a large Amish population nearby, the other located in a more rural area where shopping options are limited.

Ditto! I still have Walmart fabric from those days, in my stash. When my kids were little, that was the convenient and cheap place to find fabric to sew their clothes with. And mine!

Thank you, bearisgray. You make a very valid point. Why have a dept. if no one is buying your merchandise? Not everything is meant to be an heirloom. I have found fabric suitable for casual quilts or kid's quilts at Walmart. One just needs to be able to assess fabric and weave.

No sign of my Wal-Mart fabric department closing. If I had to guess, I'd say there's maybe 100 bolts of fabric if not more......plus other stuff.....fleece, batting, fusible, etc... My main reason for posting is to mention that I see a lot of the same fabric at Wal-Mart that I see at Hobby Lobby.
