I vote for English paper piecing or applique - There are lots of tutorials around for both - EPP fits in a small tote or plastic box - really easy to just pick up and go - If you are a little more ambitious and cathredral window is a great project- Check Eddie's tutorial - he did it all on the machine but it can be done by hand as well. Good luck

I spend ALOT of time in the hospital with our 21 yo dd and don't like hauling my quilts up to the hospital. But I am at a loss as to what to do. I like piecing but I do it by maching. I have looked for small 'kits' to buy and have in my 'hospital bag' for when we have to 'grab & run' but I have not found anything.

Do any one you have any 'kits' that I might could even purchase to have for 'next time'? Or if you have any simple easy things for me to do, idea wise, PLEASE let me know what they are.

You all are great! Thanks ahead of time for the help.
Also, if you'd like to add our dd to your prayers list please feel free to do so. She has a CB page that you can log into and read more about her if you'd like to. We'd appreciate the prayers!

Hi, Texas. I've got some redwork embroidery patterns of all things Texan--the Alamo, Stetson, wrangler, roper, oil derrick. I used them in a Texas quilt of my own design. If you would like them, p.m. me with your address and I'll send them your way. froggyintexas

I like to keep hand applique projects on had for such times as you mentioned. they are portable and easy to work on just about any place. Appliqued or embroidered blocks for a future quilt work well for this purpose. I also find crochet projects very portable. I will be in prayer for your daughter. I will also look her up on Caringbridge. I think Caringbridge is a great resource for communicating with people about such things. I have had friends on Caringbridge. It is a good way to update people without being inundated with calls, etc.

BIKINI DISH CLOTH
This is the one that I make all of the time. I use Sugar and Cream yarn, 4 ply, 2.5 oz. (You can get 2 dishcloths out of this skein.)
I use size 7 needles but it really doesn't matter. It makes the right size to fit in your hand. Many people bleach them when they get grubby. When my DH grinds it in the garbage disposal, I just make a new one. They knit up pretty fast.

BIKINI DISH CLOTH

Row 1: Cast on 4 sts.
Row 2: Knit across.
Row 3: K2, yo, knit across row.
Repeat Row 3 until there are 44-47 sts.
(Your piece will look like a tiny pair of bikini underwear.)

Begin to Decrease:
Row 1: k2, yo, k2 tog, k2 tog. Knit to end of row.
Row 2: Repeat this "decrease Row 1" until 4 sts remain.
Bind off. Weave in ends of yarn.

Wow! Never heard of this before, looks like I will love it, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I was over there looking @ everything for quite a while. I like this idea for hand-piecing portable GFG, Hex, & diamonds. Maybe for support you could cut a very thin but stiff cardstock shape same size to slip between fabrics (just a scant bit out of the way) while you're stitching.

Laquita,
I hope you are hanging in there, it's not easy stress-wise on you in this endeavour. My prayers will be for both of you.

Have you considered the fleece quilting idea with crochet to join the squares, or just crochet or blanket stitch around the edges? Just saw this recently when someone mentioned this tool. Cut fleece into squares or rectangles (larger will go fast). Use one of these tools to evenly space holes around the edges: http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/id/134583.do, http://www.skipstitch.com/products.htm.
Thread on it: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-74953-2.htm and http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-111697-1.htm and http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-26640-1.htm. Best wishes.

I don't paper piece so my thoughts go in a different direction. Have you ever pieced by hand? I hand pieced a whole quilt once and it wasn't difficult. I'm sure you could find a tutorial to show you how it's done. Another suggestion would be to teach yourself, or have someone show you, how to applique. Many, many quilters won't even try because they think it's too difficult, but it truly isn't. A VERY good book: The Easy Art of Applique published by That Patchwork Place and written by Mimi Dietrich and Roxi Eppler. It's a paper book (so not too expensive) and it's been around a long time, so you might be able to find a used one. Learning to applique will open a world of new creative outlets for you.

I take my cathedral window in baggies. I can hand sew in the car if hubby is driving. Great to do while sitting all day.
