I buy pre-wound bobbins. My MIL introduced me to them. I can just throw the cardboard away when I am done. My machine acts funny when I try to wind the plastic ones and I just wind up frustrated.

This all comes down to the kind of bobbin you are working with. Brother has a little hole, Viking and Pfaff don't, but may on the older models and Singer, I haven't a clue. Its what ever works for you and what ever your machine likes is what you should do to get the job done.

Yes, I share your blame. I find it much faster to do a few winds instead of running the thread up through the hole.

I have never put my thread through that little hole. I always wrap and never had a problem. I feel no shame though. LOL

I have two Viking machines and the new bobbins do have the hole in them. I'm not sure about the Pfaff bobbins.

No shame here. Instructions for my new Brothers Quattro specifically says to just wind a few times around and place on winder.

Prewounds are great for embroidery, but the tread is 60 weight and to light for machine piecing. The top and bobbin thread should match. (no I am not the quilting police) but you should match the weight of the thread top and bobbin to get your best seam.

I agree with this info.

Nothing wrong with what you are doing, but you are more likely to have wonky stitches near the end because the tension changes. My Bernina doesn't even have a hole. It's supposed to 'grip' the thread after you wrap it around 3 times. Yeah, well, never works for me. I wrap it 6 or 7 times for it to hold. Annoying because, as mentioned, the tension changes.
