color choices for a baby quilt for a boy...

I think the new sleep guidelines say that there should not be blankets in bed with baby. They make new sleep sacks out of fleece or blanket material to keep baby warm. This reduces the risk of suffocation. But baby still needs blankets when being held, or taken outdoors in the cool weather and when they are a few months old, to lay on the floor. My little grandson loves to play on the floor with his toys and roll over - perfect place for him to look at all those bright colors of his quilt.

I want this quilt to be useful and attractive for longer than the 1st year of life, do you think that the baby blues and greens are masculine enough to last?

I would go with the baby blues and "pretty" boy colors and combine them with either a black or a chocolate. Something dark to add a sharp contrast. I guess the execution of it really depends on the pattern, but I think it could still be cutesy and still be appealing to the kid after he's out of the baby stages. And possibly the print could really make a difference too. Like don't go for a fabric that's so totally a "baby print".

If baby falls in love with the quilt it will have a home with him for as long as it can hold together! Some of the ones I have made for my great nieces and nephews are now just tattered pieces of fabric that they keep in their memory drawer.

Babies do see black and white first but can see the full spectrum of color by 3 months, so don't worry - use any colors you like. It is a short period of time before they will see any colors you use, and they spend most of that time sleeping. ;)

When we think of babies, we tend to think of soft pastel colors, but in fact, newborns see high contrast better...black/white/red. Whatever you decide, you might want to go with saturated color instead of pastels.
