I just made a baby boy crib size quilt. It was a split rail fence pattern and I found a wonderful chocolate brown color to use. The brown had tiny bubbles of bright turquoise, bright pink and bright lime green. I used turguise and lime green for the other two rails. It turned out gorgeous! They were not traditional baby quilt fabrics but are very happy and bright. I just sent it to the long arm quilter today, so I don't have a photo to show. If I had I would have had a girl, I would have used pink instead of turqouise.

I think babies like the stronger colors, but pastels appeal more to the grown women! Unless your sister really objects, I would go with your choices.

All the baby quilts I've made have been in bright colors. I think babies respond to them better. Just be sure to put a tough binding on it, as they get loved (and dragged around) alot!

My sister is a NICU nurse and the black and white still applies. The more different shapes the better.

I recently made a quilt for my new grandson. While I always thought a baby quilt should be pastels, I was drawn to the primary colors - blue, yellow, green, red - just loved the way it turned out. The little one will use it longer, too. You should use fabric that you fall in love with.

Actually, the first colors a baby can see are bright colors, not pastels. The colors you want or the primary colors would both make a quilt that will last much longer as a usable quilt then the pastels the godmother wants. And they stay cleaner looking longer! Unless the godmother is commissioning you to make the quilt and is paying you for it, you get to make what you want!

Yes I do especially if you want the baby to have it for a while.

I think it means that all babies are now required to sleep naked in a large hamster ball so they won't hurt themselves.
