I did this too. Now I know why my squares in my first quilt didn't match up right.

Along with rulers, not all quarter inch feet are the same. When I was a real beginner, I remember someone on TV say to always use the same machine for a project. I've always followed that advice.

Yes, I discovered this years ago while altering a garment pattern and the seams weren't matching up. I couldn't blame me LOL so I started comparing my rulers - metal, plastic, and wood. Whata shocker. Every ruler got marked 'true' or 'not true.' My 'gold standard' is the wooden Dietzgen draftsman's ruler my dad used in college back in the 1920's.

I too, learned the hard way. Use ONE brand and make sure that the lines are thin and the ruler is easy to read. I also had to learn the hard way not to use the lines on the mat. Thanks for the post. I'm sure there are lots of our quilting sisters wondering why their pices don't match up and their projects don't turn out right.

I have taken 4 quilt classes and not once has an instructor mentioned this. I learned about it on these pages. Keep the great advice coming please.
