I make queen and king size quilts for a particular bed. Measuring the beds with sides and bottom hanging almost to the floor (within 6-8"). Then I use them on top of the beds.

The first 3 bed size quilts I made were a full size for my daughter, which she used on her twin size bed, then a twin size made slightly larger so that it would hang down the sides for my son's twin size bed. The third bed size quilt was for our king size bed, which I made about 110" x 110" because as my one SIL said: "One good turn deserves all the covers"; and even though I hadn't met my now husband of 47 years then, she described it exactly as he was a "quilt hog". So, in order for me to have any chance of getting the quilt, especially in winter, I made the quilt larger. Also, since I was new to quilting and nobody had told me the "rules", I probably broke all of them when I quilted it on my Kenmore sewing machine. Was it perfect, no; however, I really, really learned a lot by making and quilting that quilt, and except for a couple pen/marker stains from my DH, it could still be used on a bed, but I have it put away now. I'm thinking about changing my comforter to the last king size quilt I made, which would be perfect for my queen size bed.

I have a very high queen size bed. I make my quilts about 120 x 120. they go below the box spring. I quilt mine by hand in sections. I wash them in a regular home machine. Most Laundromats use recycled water. that's the funky smell you smell sometimes at them. Yes, your delicates are being washed in the same water as poopy diapers, and dog barf. I use smaller ones too for the holidays. the smaller quilts like my EPP3/4" GFG is my cats and she loves it. Smaller ones go for the front door. also bed runners are nice too.

So for those who do not make quilts for beds....what do you make? Just curious...

What I did is found a long bed skirt, added a 5" Irish Lace to the bottom of the skirt, then removed the top of the bed skirt and replaced it with a flat sheet. My sandwich for the bedspread was: flat sheet, right side up; bed skirt, ruffle inside the sandwich and only on sides and bottom; and pieced top, right side down. (birthing method)

Then I stitched all around leaving a space for turning at the top. After stitching, I turned it right sides out and stitched the opening closed. A good pressing and I had my quilted bedspread top with lining to protect the piecing and perfectly draping skirt.

My understanding is the question was about using a quilted piece as a bedspread, sorry if I misunderstood. I guess if one didn't use quilts for the beds they would be throws, hangings, etc.

I do make my quilts to be used on beds--with our beds having deeper mattresses, I use a bedskirt and measure each bed to I get it large enough. I have a 14' frame on my long arm so size is not an issue. (although I find those large ones a PIA to work on--just so big!) On my bed, I use a lightweight blanket and then a jacquard solid coverlet then the quilt. Don't have dogs on the bed--we live in the country and my dogs bring home dead raccoons, etc and one rolls in the neighbors' cows' manure!--so they don't even get into the bedroom--but my DH is rough quilts--he grabs (in his sleep?? that's what he claims) the top and yanks it up and then rolls over--I have one quilt that he yanked all the stitching in the top section on his side---so my rule is the quilt on our bed is over the coverlet and NOT pulled up around our necks! (a 20" "whisker protector" does nothing for the design element!)

You could fold them in half lengthways and use them as bed runners which seem to be in vogue at the moment.

I do the same with a queen size bed. I like my quilts to come down on the side and bottom. I use quilts every where in my house. On tables, across couches, on top of sewing machines, large one hung above my couch, across antique cabinets and across chairs. I love quilts as it makes my house feel nice and homey. I change out the quilt on my dining room table for different ones depending on the season and my mood. Sometimes table runs and place mats but I usually always go back to my quilts.

I use my quilts on our beds all the time. Everyone in my immediate family ( grown kids, siblings, & my Dad) has one of my quilts on there beds too. Twin to king size. Also I make them for the wall, table or wherever I want one. Everyone loves them. I always make them to hang down at least 15" (or a little more depending on the mattress thickness) on each side & bottom & always long enough for a pillow tuck. I think all of us that have quilting in our blood is the same. You see a pattern you love, you make it & then decide what you are going to do with it. Use it, gift it or display it!
