Her basting method is terrific and I agree it is relaxing and methodical and that is a lot of what quilting is about. The time spent doing it is not wasted time either. It is time to reflect, plan and be in a calm state of mind for a while. It gets us away from the busy rigors of everything else going on in our busy lives.

I use Elmer's school glue for basting all my quilts. I bought a good quality silicone basting brush to use to spread it on my batting. The silicone is easy to clean and no bristles to come out. I start in the middle and smooth toward each end one end at a time. If you have the Quilter SlideLock then it's perfect to smooth the quilt! A member here posted that tip and it's wonderful.

Kitsie, I bought the tips from Roxanne Glue Baste-It, it comes with its own bottle and you can refill it using the Elmer's Glue. Puts out a fine line of glue instead of globs.

I’ve only used Elmer’s for binding...I’ll have to give basting a try.

Maybe if you tell us why you had bad luck or bad results with it, those of us who love it can give you some help to be successful with it? I use it straight, and smooth the fabric over each side, a half at at time, and give it plenty of time to dry. I aim to keep my glue swirls about four inches apart. I have a sheet of vinyl that I bought at Walmart, that I spread on the spare room bed, then do my gluing layers on it, so I can leave it sit until it is dry and do not have to move it until dry and basted.

I use it to hold binding in place, as I flip to front and sew. I put little dots in the corners of HST when sewing, use it for piecing of many small parts. perfect corners, perfect miters perfect piecing. ELMER is my FAVORITE MAN. how ever I don't use it for basting. That I spray.

I get so many great ideas from this board. I, too, love Elmer's Glue for basting quilts. You learn so much from everyone on here.

If the glue goes through the fabric, I just let it dry on the vinyl, and peel it off.

Thanks quilt9278 for using Elmer's to bast difficult seams I am sewing a Lone Star and have been machine basting to make the seams line up exactly. Great tip.
