Giving Quilts - No Reaction from Recipients

For Christmas I was planning to have a king size quilt completed for my in-laws. This year was crazy (which they would understand why I was so busy) and I was unable to have the quilt completed. So I wrapped up the quilt top and stated I would take it back and get it quilted and returned in January. The only response the quilt top go was "It's nice". This makes is very hard for me to want to finish the quilt for them as I spent so much time and effort to make them this gift. Has this happened to others? How do you get over the lack of reaction to gifts that you spend so much time on?

Some folks' reactions are just plain flat. Others have no idea of the time, expense and love gone into making a quilt. If you or anyone else) are at all interested, I have a wonderful article I could snail mail you addressing this and similar scenarios. Just PM me.

Here are pictures of the quilt. I still have to add a 2" pieced square border, 2" brown border, and 4" green border. Then planned to send out for quilting.
The colors are colors that match with their house and decor, which my husband picked out for them. Also, I made a smaller verison of this quilt as a throw that they told me they really liked the pattern, so I guess I didn't think twice about them not liking the design.

The reason I could not have it completed before Christmas was that we moved twice this past year. The second time just before Thanksgiving. During the moves, most of my quilting stuff was packed in storage, which they helped move.
I can honestly say I wasn't hoping for jumping up and down or any kind of praise. I think mostly I was just looking for a smile (which by the way I didn't get).

Oh it's lovely! Finish it for 'em & know that you tried your best. You picked out their colors & a pattern so maybe it was a bad day for 'em or too overwhelming. If they still don't react well then you'll know not to ever make 'em anything else.

This situation is presented here every few weeks - we have to start reading the posts here ladies :>) Inquire ahead of time if the person would like a quilt; don't expect everyone to be thrilled by your considerable talents; if you require a lot of mushy thank-yous, perhaps you should make quilts "by requests only". Remember ladies, unless you're dealing with another quilter - most women think they can pickup a similar one at Walmart for about $20.00.

I think that most people who do not quilt just do not realize the time, effort aqnd expense involved in such a gift. Then there are others who just dont like quilts believe it or not! If it was mine I would still finish it but NEVER send another time intensive and work intensive gift, instead send a gift card for someplace you know they shop. It is a lovely quilt, too bad they werent more vocal.

I would perhaps include a note with this beautiful quilt saying that you will provide a financial statement so that they can have it insured for the proper amount since it is beyond the amount covered by a typical homeowner's policy. Most people do not realize that a quilt of that quality is worth way more than $500. Perhaps then they might like it a lot more.
