I would hand quilt the whole thing .The value would go up substantially.

LOL! I think there are a few quilt police in disguise hanging around here. She did ask our opinion and so many were given. IMHO, I would do just what she said she thought would be best. There were a lot of good ideas thrown out there, but in the end, I suppose it all depends on what will please her and what she wants to do with the quilt after it is finshed. This was an interesting thread.

You know, you can do whatever you want to do, when you want to do it, how you want to do it! Why do you feel like you have to ask permission or someone else's opinion? There are no rules and/or quilt police; finish it as you please and it will be perfect! GiGi

It's a beautiful top! Whichever way you decide to finish it will only make it more so. I have seen prize winning quilts, with both hand and machine quilting on the quilt, sell for well over a thousand dollars. I have also been to auctions where the machine quilted quilts brought a lot more than the hand quilted ones. I truly believe if the workmanship is there people don't really care if it is by hand, machine or both.

i think it depends on what you expect to sell it for and what the difference in prices reflects in hours of work.
for example, if hand quilting takes an extra 50 hours and you only get $100 more, is it worth it to you?

I've done quilts with both machine & hand quilting in the same quilt. I don't think it should matter if you mix it up. I machine quilted the parts of the quilt that would have been difficult to hand quilt (lots of seam intersections) and hand quilted the plain blocks so the hand quilting could be seem more easily. I bet most people noticed the hand quilting and didn't even notice the machine part.

I want to thank each and every one of you for responding. I actually started quilting on this top last night. I still haven't decided if I'm going to hand quilt any on it or not. I have started machine quilting the "tree" and since I'm so slow at it, it will be a while before I even have to decide if I'm going to quilt the white area by hand or machine! I'm so much better at hand-quilting than with a machine, that's why I'm thinking about finishing it by hand. It's a nice top and I don't want to ruin it with my inexperience!
