To discover it is a particular capability of a sewing machine made in Utah...the best machine ever made...I feel really stupid. I see why you call it IDT...try saying Integrated Dual Transportation 3 times really fast.
My machine is a cheap Brother from Walmart. The Pfaff I inherited from my best friend last May still uses a treadle and can't even zigzag...but I'll keep it just the same.
I used to work at a LQS and they sold Pfaff’s. I got one because of the IDT but the computer broke after 2 years and was expensive to fix (I never kept a magnet in the sewing room.) I got a FW in January this year and love it.

It's the main thing that makes up for the fact that my high end Pfaff has never had good communication with the computer. It is easy to engage and disengage and is not bulky and helps with accuracy. No need to really 'push' the fabric through as the machine 'grabs' it.
