I include the poem "It's okay if you sit on your quilt; it's okay if you spit on your quilt' etc - you can find it via Google - with the utility baby quilts I give away BECAUSE I make them to be used. They're not fussy-pieced, and they're not hand quilted. I include washing instructions - MACHINE washing! Some of those babies have received a wedding quilt later in their life, and that one is fancier AND it's hand quilted - or (now that my thumbs don't work any more) fancier machine quilted. My DGD and DGSs have all used and used their baby quilts MUCH to my GREAT pleasure. I'm happy to mend them as needed, and they all know I made them, so they're building memories of me. Isn't that what we want? A quilt sitting in a dark closet doesn't build memories.

I only want my quilts to be gently used, taken care of and my hours of work and the money I have invested in them respected. If something is torn to shreds does not mean it was respected or appreciated or loved - means someone doesn't know how to teach respect for things. A cheap store bought blanket would serve those better. Sorry that is the way I feel about anything I give. One daughter dropped out of her 1st & 2nd Marriages w/ 3 kids and took all their baby quilts with her, never to be seen again. I wish she had left them folded in a closet, at least they would have them now.

I have used and abused a well loved quilt my grandmother gave me when I was a child. I still sleep with it and I have not spent more then a few nights with out it. I am 25 now.
My grandmother passed away almost 10 years ago. I have thought about putting my quilt up and saving it for years to come.
But I think my grandmother would love to know that her quilt was so special to me that it is still used everyday

My Mother won a quilt in an auction while visisting my brother out west and brought it back with her. She was so happy and excited. She gave it to me. I thought it was ugly. Well, I'm a quiltmaker and how one can have sibling rivalry with a quilt I don't know, but I did,(she never beamed at the quilts I made...). I put the quilt on a top shelf of the closet and there it stayed. When my Mother passed away suddenly I took down the quilt. It was bright and happy and handstitched (something I don't do), and I could see my Mother's excitement and happiness just looking at it. I put it on my bed and it is still there today. Whenever I put it around me it is a hug from her. I guess what I'm saying is that a quilt doesn't have to be perfect or even made by the person who gives it to you. Just given with love. It doesn't need to be abused to be loved, just appreciated, and loved back.
