Exactly why I wash them before gifting, just to make sure ... I'm looking and thinking, maybe a bit of iron-on interfacing on the underside of both pieces to stabilize them, then carefully blind stitch them together? And then an applique (the giftee's initial, perhaps?) if it still looks a little raggedy? Good luck, it looks like a fun quilt!

Wow - good thing you caught that - I realize now why you should wash it before you gift it - I wonder what caused that and how do you fix it??? Let us know so if it happens to us we can fix ours - thanks for sharing

If this is an example of your quilting, I have every confidence that you can fix this small "boo-boo". And, if this is the back of the quilt, I would love to see the front.
I'm sorry that this happened but, it is fixable. I would turn the edges under, press, put a small piece of fusible webbing under the split, make press again and then blind stitch the entire seam. Hopefully there is enough fabric.
Your quilt is beautiful and I'm sure your roommate will love it.

I hate when this happens. Applique is a good idea per klnsmith!

This has happened to me too. I'm guessing it is because one side of the fabric wasn't lined up with the other and made a smaller than a 1/4 inch seam on one side.

I think what happened is this: The seam that "blew out" is cut on the bias. I'm thinking that I didn't have a full 1/4" seam at that spot so when it went through the washer, stress was put on the seam and the weave just let go.

I have pulled out the quilting and the damaged portion (the red swirl and white piece) and I also ripped out extra stitches on each side of this area. I think I will be able to sew the bias seam on the sewing machine. Then I believe that I will have to hand sew the other three sides. Will let you know how it goes!!

I thought of the iron on interfacing too but the area is so frayed that the edges won't even come together.

I can't do any fusible to it because the fabric is so frayed the edges of the two pieces doesn't even touch! I was going to post pictures today but I will wait until it is fixed. (ps the quilt is for a classmate, not a roommate!)
