Take a look at a Juki. My longarm machine is a Juki and is reasonable with a nice throat for quilting.

I am no expert. I just started and have only finished 1 top and am still marking it for quilting. I took a class last month and was afraid of maching quilting since it is a queen and is HUGE! I want to use it before I am 100 so hand quilting for me is out of the question. My instructor said that it is possible to do with a regular size machine and she had even done a king but it will not be easy, just to work on small sections at a time. ? I hope that will help. I want to start on mine within the next few weeks.

if you are just looking for FMQ i would say the brother PQ1500s has 9 inch throat and you can find them online for $500 , I think there is a similar juki but cant remember the model number

I just FMQ a queen size on my Brother SQ9000. I just rolled it, and didn't have any problems. Of course, now it is acting crazy, and has to be sent for repairs, and only 9 months old. Off to buy a backup Sunday.

I agree, there are many fine machines out there, you just have to settle on the features you personally like, and then do a lot of reading/research, viewing and test driving.

There are lots of positive replies about the 6600 and MY NEW BABY WAS DELIVERED LAST NIGHT !!!!! She purrs along, I am so thrilled to have her. I have updated my machine from my first one -a Janome 4800 - then I got a Janome Gem ( great little workhorse and good for taking to classes etc) Then I got a Janome 9700 - traded it from my 4800. The throat wasn't big enough and I did not use the embroidery side of the machine like I thought I would. So I changed it and, on the advice of a friend, bought a Pfaff QE4. I just did not get on with it. Don't ask me why, it is a great machine, nothing wrong with it, I just didn't gel with it.
So listening to advice did not really help me, I should have sat and played with the machine in a shop myself.
Anyway, I am happy now, I feel as though I am back in the Janome family and am going to have lots of fun with my new baby. !!

I have also been interested in Janome; I have a Kenmore/Janome from Sears and it does a great job quilting except it doesn't like to go over bumps. I bought the Viking #1 because I couldn't afford the newer ones and I want to try machine embroidery; it's in the shop right now but getting excited about getting it out soon. Make sure what ever you get you get a walking foot; can't believe the difference it makes since I don't know how to free motion; YET
Maybe you could try a jeans foot so it will go over bumps better. Is is made to go overe seams in jeans.

How about looking at used machines? Or looking at new ones to find out what you like and then shoppig for a used one?
There are lots of reasons a machine is for sale....
