Make sure you measure from the same spot on the writing and have a full set of them other wise you will be short. If you can see the actual repeat, you can get less as long as it is in multiples of 6.

Cutie, I've been reading your OBW/hexagons instructions this past week, while on vacation (I have my laptop but no sewing machine). I was so captivated that I knew I had to try it. Yesterday went to a quilt shop and bought two pieces of fabric. The first (zebras) I just loved -- but am not sure how it would work in OBW (not a problem, since I'll surely find another use, if necessary). Its repeat is 8". The second (waterlilies) is a 24" repeat and I'm pretty sure it would work well. It is interesting how I see the fabric differently in a photo (a better representation of the relative quantities of each color).

Assuming you'll recommend using the second one...my questions are what size strips to cut (I've read your subsequent threads) and should I go back to the store and get more of this fabric? (I got 4 yards, which gives a single set of 6 repeats.)

Thanks so much!!!!!

I think both would work well, for the size strips to cut, measure a med sized item in the print and add maybe a 1/4 in or 1/2 in for seam allowance and go with around that.

4 yards wont make a big one that is for sure so it wholey depends on what size quilt that you will be wanting.

Ok, a little behind. I have 2 choices. One is cranes and I really love the fabric period. It has shiny gold outlining the cranes. Looks like an 8 inch repeat lengthwise. Unfortunately they only had just a hair over 2yards left.

I like the second for the colors. looks like and 18 inch repeat lengthwise. I think I got a little over 4 1/2 yards.

I would like help with choice and if how to cut both length and width repeats. I want to make the quilts as big as possible.

Thanks so much for everyones help!

The cranes I would consider around 2 1/2 ish. Just to be able to seperate the colors soMe and the other ones I think you can go as big as 4 inches. I love both and am looking forward to seeing what comes out of them.

I am wondering, do you think the leaves would be better? May be the cranes are too close and small. I am a stash hound, so the cranes wouldn't get wasted. I want to have good technique, the pattern of the fabric doesn't seem as important as the variation in shapes and colors.
Be brutal. I can take it.

I think that both are good choices. You just have to cut according to size. There is real no way to say for sure what it will look like when you are done. Maybe start with the leaves and when you are snagged you can do the cranes next. The leaves will make a bigger top obviously. And the blocks will be bigger so less sewing.
