I love the feature of touching a button and cutting the tread. Saves time. My friend has a Jamone and loves it.

All great features to look for. Also try and get the quarter inch foot and an even feed foot.

I adore my Janome 6600. Got to a reputable quilt shop that offers inexpensive classes. Definitely want needle down, walking foot and edge foot.

Thank you everyone for all your input. I am going into the store today to test drive....it is an hour away from me, so I have done some phone shopping first. I printed off a list of all your suggestions which I am taking with me. I have decided to just test drive today and make my decision at a later date. (this will be extremely hard not getting to take it home right away) but at least I will be able to think about pros and cons to the ones I have narrowed it down to. I do have a basic kenmore which I do all my piecing with so the new one will be set up all the time for free motion. Watch me come home with a long arm!
Thanks again everyone
Denise

I have the Janome and love it, I have had it about 4 years and I picked it for the wonderful bright light over the sewing area.

I have 2 Janomes-6600P and 9000 which is 13 yrs. old. I would love to upgrade to the 11000, but can't right now. needle up-down, 1/4 foot, walking foot and knee lift are the best features. For those of you that have the knee lifts and haven't tried them--please do! they are great!!!! i use it even when i'm garment sewing or mending . when i first used it, i kept getting it mixed up with my gas pedal!lol, but it's a wonderful tool. you'll be glad you have it!

HSN had a nice looking Singer Quantam L-500 for sale this week. It had a built in walking foot like the Pfaff, knee lift a lots of extra feet and you can pay for it in installment payments. You probably can look at it on their web site. I know it's better to buy from a local dealer but this can be an option when the money is tight. Good luck in your search.
