What is your first quilt memory?

Lived in a very small town when I was about 5 or 6. My girlfriend's grandmother used to have a "bee" when the ladies would gather to quilt on a frame. We used to visit her and sit under it. Nice memories!

When my husband and I were first married we inherited a scrappy quilt his grandmother made. It was yellow & reds and even though it was well used when we got it, I loved it. We used it until it fell apart. His grandmother was always sewing something or doing needlework. She made an AMAZING cathedral windows quilt by hand. That was about 27 years ago. No one in my family quilted until I started about 3 years ago. My great grandmother did make lace (crochet?) that she put on pillowcases that we always had around when I was quite young.

My first memory of a quilt was about the age of 8. My mom and aunt were sitting at this big box of wads of wool. They sat with these paddle-looking things with lots of needles attached to one of the flat sides. They said that they were combing the wool for ladies to make new quilts for our new house which was being built. My sister and I took turns combing the wool. The next thing I remember was going the house of the women who had made the quilts. Both were whole-cloth and hand quilted in beautiful designs. I have no idea what happened to the quilts, but I remember sleeping under the pretty blue plaid. The other was solid pink polished cotton.

My baby "blanket" that got taken everywhere was actually a little quilt; I know I still have it somewhere but it has been m.i.a. lately. I also had a crib size quilt, and I remember my uncle wrapping me up in it and swinging it back and forth like a hammock, I loved that! I'm very peculiar about texture and I love the way that quilts don't tend to pill like blankets, and I've always found their cool touch refreshing in the summer. I used that crib quilt as a throw/pillow on my bed until I was in my early 20's and realized it needed to be "retired" for it's own good. In a stroke of luck I found a full 2 yards of the fabric that it was made from online recently; I bought that so fast I bet my head spun.
So I've always loved their feel and comforting nature. But only recently have I actually started attempting to make them.

We always had quilts on our beds when I was growing up. My paternal grandmother did crazy quilts on a treadle machine. Like others stated we did not have any heat upstairs in the bedrooms so I always had two-three quilts covering me. You didn't move once they were over top of you. Maybe that's why I still stay in the same position when I sleep to this day!!! I really don't know what my mom did with all those quilts after I left home. Sure wish I had one of those. Grandma did make my son a corduroy quilt when he was little and he still has it. My maternal grandmother didn't quilt as I recollect but she did tat and I have some of those pieces which I cherish. Thanks Leesa for bringing back some of those great memories.

I was about 4 when my grandma was putting a back onto a yo yo quilt she was making. she backed it with aqua corduroy and I thought it was the prettiest thing I ever saw. she gave it to me when I was 16. it's a treasure still.
