What was your very first sewing machine, and how old were you?

I learned on a Singer treadle. I guess I was about 7 or8, since I could just reach the treadle. My Grandma lived with us and the first thing you had to learn was to get the rythm of the treadle right. I've sure come a long way with machines since then. I have two Babylocks and also a Babylock serger.

About 60 years ago I asked my mother to sew me doll clothes. She didn't sew. My father bought me a second hand Kenmore and lesson's at the local Singer sewing center. I have had several machines since but I still have that old Kenmore and it still works just fine.

mine was a turquoise/white Kenmore she was an old used one I got her for Christmas when I was 8 to this day that one is still my favorite Christmas. I no longer have her she was lost in a house fire but I"m always keping my eyes open for one of her sisters

My story is very different! I was terrible at sewing in Home Ec in high school -- we made a skirt and I never finished it. My sister was quite a seamstress -- made lined jackets and other clothes. About 6 years ago a friend of mine at work was wearing the cutest ties and shirts that he embroidered himself. My husband had just bought his second or third old motorcycle and I decided I wanted an embroidery machine. So, I bought a BabyLock Ellageo. As it turns out, I don't really enjoy doing embroidery with it and now use the embroidery feature pretty much to put names on the rag blankets I've made. I was about 47 or 48 when I bought the machine. I've made about 70 rag blankets and have pieced some borders to go on panels and then did FMQ to finish. I've also done some applique. Working up my nerve to piece the first whole quilt.

I learned on a Singer treadle and then my mother bought me an electric Singer for my 21st birthday/wedding present. That was 52 years ago and I made all my own clothes, baby clothes, curtains, covers for our water skis, dolls clothes and anything else that could be sewn. Eventually upgraded a couple of times but it was still one of the best.

My mom let me have great grandmothers treadle when I was just a kid. Both grandmothers sewed, one for the need, one for the profit - I had a good foundation. My mom died still barely able to thread a needle and mend a pillowcase.
But in her last years she sure enjoyed immensely being with me, helping, while I worked at my quilting. I made my kids clothes on that treadle; eventually daddy got mom a Kenmore in a cabinet (Only the Lord knows why he bought her a machine!) and I was the one who used it.
