I buy anywhere from 1 to 3 yards if I like it and even more if I plan to use it for borders or as a background.

i make mostly baby quilts, and I usually buy 2 yards if I like it. I buy up to 5 yards of neutrals for backing and background, and whatever I get at bolt ends for a bargain. I find fat quarters, charms and jelly rolls overpriced, but would buy them if they were a terrific bargain. I have a regular bookshelf for my small yardages and plastic bins for my larger lengths.

I have enough for a long time to come, I think. Since I have (locally) only a small section in Walmart and a Joann's in which to buy fabric, I always bought the rest of the bolt (if it was at least a yard) if it met 2 qualifications: Excellent quality and gorgeous pattern/color, a rare combination around here and therefore not to be passed up.

I buy at least one yard and then try to buy a yard of several coordinating colors/patterns. then when I do have a project to do I go back and buy fabric for it. Broke all the time except for fabric.

As a scrap quilter: I buy remnants (whatever size) if I like them, 1/2 yards if I have to have them, 2-3 yards of stuff for backings, borders, sashing, and fat quarters because I can't resist. No strips, jelly rolls, whatever you call those things. I can cut them myself. Again: As a scrap quilter: I love the variety I can accumulate for a bit of this and a bit of that with fat quarters. And whoever invented them is on my s... list 'cause I can't pass 'em by!

A few days ago I went to Joanne's for a yard of cotton gray
sparkly material. I'm making a lap robe for my daughter's
second grade room, and she wanted Robots all over it like
she's decorated her room.

Found just the perfect thing, plus 4 others with Boy Scout
themes. Since my youngest son was an Eagle plus 3 Palm
Leaves, I simply had to get it. For what, at this time I don't
know, but have a yard each for his next present, probably
Christmas, since he was 42 last month.

I am trying hard not to buy much fabric at all.. I generally have to buy backing and sometimes borders.. but my stash likes to grow and enough is enough.. So for the past year and a half I've held it down.. A LOT.. never thought I say that, but here I am.. not buying hardly anything. Much to my surprise, I still have lots of fabric that is waiting to find it's way into a quilt. I thought I'd use it up by now.. maybe it really does mulitply when I leave it alone down in my sewing room!

Buy what I need for a particular project and maybe if another fabric that "I can't live without" appears in my cart, I'll take it home with me.

I do a lot of applique and find that fat quarters work really well. I also buy charm packs to make bags.
