Depending on who of what it is sometimes, Neice 10.00 pants hemmed, sure..... Brothers work pants patched, once in a while, someones 50.00 pair of slacks, those need to go to the taylor, Dress Coat, Taylor. Prom Dress. etc. Did hear not long ago someone was charged 30.00 to shorten the sleves of a coat, but would hate to have to replace if something went wrong. Cool sewng for me and mine, have altered many poor fitting things w/only a few O cruds. But only if they were way on sale. :)

YES------------ to all of the above. An in-law asked me make a quilt for their bed, but, she wanted it to be all gray and with down feathers. I said no nicely.

That was a blanket not a quilt. Right?

And bridesmaid dresses! OH how I HATE making bridesmaid dresses. I sew also but I really hate doing alterations, mending, and sewing for others. Costumes for plays I don't mind but other than that. . . . .
Once people in our church found out that I could sew I've made dresses for bridesmaids in two weddings, altered pants, mended pants, altered skirts, etc. Now I work very slowly so I'm not asked to do to much anymore.

I used that answer when asked to work with knits! It worked.

People's eyes light up when they hear I quilt so I say right up front that it's different from sewing! I don't do that type of sewing!

You know, I've only had one person ask if I took in sewing "from the public", so I do believe that he was willing to pay for it.

I do hem up my own and my husband's pants, and sew my own clothing. I don't do any other alterations, though. But every time I hem up a pair of pants (I'm short-legged, so basically anything not labeled "short" or "petite" is going to be two inches too long, or longer)I feel like I've outsmarted whoever it is that thinks we're all at least 5'6".

I tell them I charge too much and they can get it done cheaper at the dry cleaners.

I CAN mend, but I don't. I used to put the kids' mending in "the mending pile" until they outgrew it. My husband learned long ago that if it was important enough for repair or alteration, just take it directly to the tailor or he'd probably never see it again.

I fix people's pockets. I'm waiting for the day when pockets no longer fail. Seriously, what year is it? And, pockets are still failing!?!

Nope, never had anyone ask me that. Guess we country folk are a tad diffrent. :wink:
