I think maybe with the paint chips, she is wanting to give a precise palette that works optimally, since people will be using it to choose fabrics and because not everyone has a comfort level or expertise in choosing colors. For example, suppose you took a chip that was closer to how you perceive the main bluebonnet color (it seems brighter and more purple to me than the dress blues chip). That replacement chip might not look quite as good with the other paint chips. But when the chips are translated to a range of color in fabrics, that precision doesn't matter so much. I think the other factor is probably contrast. The paint chips may represent the optimal value contrast for the pattern, but it works with a range of values, just like the color.

This year I was really trying to use stash and not spend too much on fabric. I had lots of the navy blues, so I decided to stick closely to the chips. If I had been prepared to buy a lot of fabric this year, I might have gone with the look of the photos rather than with the chips. I think your fabric choices are wonderful!
Hi, and thanks for your reply. I think you are correct about the paint chips VS her actual fabrics... which is why I think it adds to my confusion. When I went back and read her directions, the paint chips are a range of color. I was taking too literally. Since this photo, I have added a few lighter fuscias (to add a range instead of one color), and took the 2 blues off to the right and added them to the lights on the left. I am happy with my choices (so far) and will post a picture of clue #1 after I transfer from camera to computer.

I agree with you about the cost and purchasing more fabric when you already have a stash. We want to use up what we have, however, we want our hard work invested in the colors we want. Ahh, such an expensive little hobby, isn't it?

Everyone's 4-patches are looking great! It's amazing how many shades of blue and raspberry exist.

Mine are done and I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow's clue. Going to a sit and sew with friends tomorrow so it will be fun working on the clue along with others doing the same thing.

This year I've modifying the colors again since I prefer more muted tones in my quilts. So far the colors I chose are playing well together, but only time will tell.

Here is Clue #1, and I made too many. I might make bigger, we'll see. Really do love these colors.

I am working hard at being more diligent at removing loose threads as I go. So much easier than on a larger scale.

By the way, Clue #2 is already up.

Wow...everyone is chugging right along. I just returned to Maine this week (having been gone a month) and was delighted to find the paint chips Iceblossom was so kind to mail me while I was in California. Thanks Cathy.
DH and I are in Massachusetts this weekend caring for his 99 year old mother so I am hoping to pop into a quilt shop in the area for some fabric inspiration. I have a small stash so I will need to add a few pieces of fabric for this project.

Joe’smom, I’m sorry to hear about your sinus infection...I was really careful traveling, wiping things down and dosing on EmergenC. I hope you are on the mend.

Origami and Girlfriend, your 4 patches look fabulous. I can’t wait to get started...and thank you for sharing your quarter-inch experiences. I will definitely be testing mine too.

Miss Rita, I love your color choice and cant’ wait to see how your quilt comes together.
Toverly, I’m happy that you decided to jump in and look forward to seeing your colors too.
SusieQ...you finished just in time for Clue 2. Are you doing the full size? I haven’t decided yet.

I really love these easy clues, keep 'em coming Bonnie! Maybe she is stretching the clues out a little longer this year by making units in multiple steps. Especially since it is a shorter time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day this year.
