Sandra, I'm not sure it will matter all that much. If you think back to the other quilts where Bonnie has used matched sets for part of the quilt (cotton boll, Allietare, En Provence) they would all work just fine without being matched. It's just that you won't have a matching element within the blocks (presuming the matching is going to be within blocks). But I understand wanting it to be just right.

Joe's Mom, I just looked at my Allietare and you are probably right. Geez, feel so silly thinking I was doing so well. If I leave it then it will be super scrappy! Not so particular in getting it just right with Bonnie's quilts since it seems the more fabrics the better. I made one of hers not scrappy and I dont like it as well. Not sure what I will do now.

Don't feel bad, Sandra-P, I had to go over it several times before I got what I'm doing and what I'm hoping is correct! If it isn't correct, well I'm going to have to go with what I've got because I've used up a lot of my fabric today.

Can you put together what you've done so at least they are in sets using the same background/foreground? That is if you have Blue 1 (B1) and it is sewn to various aquas (A1, A2, A3, etc), can you put together sets of B1 and ignore the A?? Then do B2, etc. It might not be as bad as you think and since you are still making units you have time to work with them.

I've had to go very slowly with this step. With these hand dyes, when I cut a triangle it can look like it came from two entirely different pieces of fabric, so even though I'm being vewy vewy careful (wabbit hunting) without exactly fussy cutting, my end result isn't going to necessarily look like they are all from the same fabric.

Ok....I’ve read this clue a few times and so has hubby. I think I have it right! We are allowed to use our full range of blues correct? Just only one particular fabric per set? I don’t have that many aquas so might have a hard time coming up with the number of distinct sets.

I've used yardage the past 4 mysteries. It is at about this point in the process I think "boring!", but I'm usually happy with the end result, and if I'm not it's because I chose poorly. I do choose fabrics with a monotone pattern/ movement in them, since the scrappy ones have a lot of movement. I think you'll be fine.

This is a little confusing for me too... the HSTs and QSTs are all cut from the same 2.5" wide strip of fabric? Is a "pair" of HSTs one HST sewn together? In my head, 4 HSTs would be 2 pair of HSTs... I'm thinking it means a pair of fabrics rather than a pair of HSTs... lol, I overthink, I know.

So this is what I'm doing --

I'm cutting two strips of each fabric, Wildyard. One the strip width, since I'm using old school techniques and not the specialty ruler mine is a little larger and then I trim down the HST. Then I have another strip cut to the wider dimension she talks about, I cut one square of each of the wider fabrics and cut it with an X. It works out pretty even in terms of 1 larger block plus two smaller squares of each fabric per set. The two smaller squares each give me two HST for a total of 4.

Most of my dark/medium pieces were getting small to start with, I've been averaging 3 sets from each of them, although some I did have WoF. I have less aqua fabrics but more of them are WoF.

For now I'm paper clipping my sets together, that is 4 sewn HST and 4 each of both colors unsewn QST.

edit: Here's some of my sets of what I think is wanted -- someone please let me know if I've gotten it wrong.

Yes, full range of blues, one blue per set. I will not have 41 distinct sets either, but will pick some of my favorite blue/aqua pairs and do them twice.


I agree that it means a pair of fabrics (I think she's referring to each separate triangle as an HST in that paragraph), so the pair of triangles sewn together = 1 HST, and we want to end up with 4. It looks like they can all be cut from the same 2.5" strip of fabric if we're using WOF strips.

I'm still working on the 2018 Mystery, but My Bonnie Club is having a two day Sew-a-Thon on the Thur/Fri of the 2nd clue.. We had a ball: 9 am to 7 pm.. Potluck lunch/dinners. and then back to our 1st & 3rd Mtg days. I am not using her colors this year. Wanted to cull some of the yardage laying about. But I'll be watching and following along.

Thanks Iceblossom and everyone else for helping me understand. I have now learned to read all the pages to the end, as that page 3 really did help clarify it for me. Not having the special ruler, I will be doing it old school too! Somehow I missed comprehending that small detail that the QSTs are going to be a different size. LOL Once I got that, I feel much better about it all.
I have another comfort quilt to finish tomorrow, then I will start this clue.

Oh today I was at AC Moore and they had some fat quarters for $1 each. I added to my aqua and raspberry fabrics, as mine were going more to red. These will make a nice addition!
