I have a 4 shelf cabinet full of fabric, a 3 drawer plastic cabinet full, a 5 drawer cabinet for small pieces, 2 plastic tubs full of flannel, and a basket of "waiting in the wings" fabric (saved for a specific project) Would love to get a larger cabinet but DH said if I had a larger cabinet I would buy more fabric. Isn't that the idea?

Yep ...I know some of you are thinking "downsize" that stash... and I do periodically do some weeding, but when I want to quilt... I want to quilt not go to the store.
I did ask our insurance agent if all my sewing stuff was covered and if I needed to get a rider for it - I threw out $40,000 as a rough estimate of replacement cost (I think that's low) - and really didn't get an answer.

I know that number seems high, but I've been sewing and accumulating for 50 years - - - -

I am loving all the pictures of your stashes and sewing rooms.

I have been sewing and quilting since I was 13. I started with 3-4 file boxes of fabric (clothing to sew plus scraps). My first 2 quilts were mostly from fabric scraps, the first took 5 yr and was all hand pieced both sides and quilted. Since then, I mostly just made simple quilts for children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews as they arrived, and table cloths, curtains and such, as needed. I've done more complicated quilts in the past 10 years or so, so that's when the fabric accumulation really started. I have about 10 clear storage boxes with fabric, plus more in baskets and piles. One box is cat fabric. i have a bag of music fabric and another of Christmas fabric. The rest I try to sort by color or by project, but it's not all sorted. Some is in my sewing room in the basement, but I hadn't been able to climb stairs, so more recent fabric is in the garage. My sewing machine is on the dining room table right now with a few piles nearby.

Someone mentioned collape of the floor-I haven't had that, but I've had piles collapse, and basement floods. I had to wash everything in baskets on the floor and piles that collapsed onto the floor. So now, everything on the floor is in plastic bins. Also have 2 small chests of patterns, mostly clothing, but some quilting or other projects.

Don't even ask about quilting magazines. They're mostly disorganized in magazine boxes. DH wants me to scan the parts I want and discard the magazines. It would probably be easier to find the patterns that way, but I still like looking through the magazines.

I took this pic on Saturday when I moved my sewing room into the formal dining area. This is it for stash except for about 4 kits that are in a chest.

DH says I have a lot of fabric, but I think my stash looks sad compared to others'. LOL

*edit* I don't know why my pic posted sideways! ack!

This is the yardage before I moved so that I would have a record for insurance purposes.
I'm not proud of the hoard..but I'm not embarrased either...it's there to share )

I would be embarrassed for anyone to see my stash right now. I've been collecting since about 2000. I started folding fabric on comic boards, so far I've used about 300 boards and only about half way through.

I have probably about fabric for 3 large quilts, about 6 kits for medium quilts and small wall hangings, I have maybe 6 fabrics with no plan as of yet, but I don't often buy fabric with no plan in mind
