I have made arrangements for my daughter to cover my casket with a quilt made by my mother, her mother and one of my aunts. I, too, think that the cost of floral arrangements are excesssive and that a quilt is an appropriae cover for the casket of a quilter.

My dear MIL was a prolific quilter. Her last quilt layed with her at the funeral home. Everyone she had given quilts to brought them to the church and spread them across the pews for her fureral service. Made us feel she was there with us.

I have thought about this....as a matter of fact I recently told my daughter that when I die I want a quilt on my casket. I am glad to see others have done this. Love the story of the unfinished quilt and a "rewarding" ending. A quilt just 'seams' so much more personal, and it is something that a family member can keep.

I am posting a link to my DMIL's memorial service. We used some of her quilts, since they are spread across the county we couldn't get them all back but you will see a tribute to her work.

I hadn't thought of it but it is a great ideal. Sandy

What a wonderful idea. I would love a quilt on my casket and my flowers while I'm alive!

When mom died we used the last quilt that she'd finished as a table cover on the memorial table of pictures, when daddy got killed 5 months to the day later we used the same quilt for the same purpose. Daddy was a veteran so he had a flag on his casket but he was also a farmer so we had bushel baskets with live stalks of corn and soy beans at each end of his casket. It was a beautiful and very fitting ceremony. I think that people today are customizing funerals more and more to fit the loved one. Thankfully we're no longer bound by traditional flowers, music, etc. What could be more appropriate for a quilter than to be under, for one last time, a beautiful quilt?
