Why do I hate fold and flip?

Working on a quilt right now that has been my Pandora's Box of problems. Every block has a small corner block that is folded, stitched, and trimmed off....I hate doing these. Yet I will make dozens of half square triangles with no problem. Basicially aren't they the same? Anyone else dislike doing these?

I don't mind doing those. I like doing Lori Holt patterns and she does that a lot. I use the folded corner ruler and makes it easy. You put the square in place. And instead of sewing from corner to corner, you use the ruler to cut both fabrics ( the square and the piece you are sewing to). After cutting, you just sew a quarter inch seam and press.

Can you pinpoint what it is about the fold-stitch-cut technique that bothers you?
I also use the (mini) Folded Corners ruler. It eliminates the drawing of a diagonal line, which is the part of that technique that I prefer to avoid -- it's so time-consuming. As for simply folding the corner square, I can't see the fold line adequately. I also avoid HST techniques that require drawing a line.

While working on Elizabeth Hartman's dinosaur pattern, there were lots of stitch and flip, very tiny ones even. I just don't care for tiny little pieces is all. Never gave it much thought about stitch and flip. Most of those I trimmed off, I made into HST to be used somewhere else. In fact the largest ones ended up on the extra wide sash I added to the quilt to make it fit better on the boy's bed. The tiniest ones I did stitch into HST but realized once they were stitched to something else, there wouldn't be much left of them so I actually tossed them.

Many years ago (20??) I would snort derisively at what I referred to as "fabric wasteful" techniques. Boy, have I changed my tune! The speed and accuracy have won me over and I have convinced myself that there is very little waste with the small triangles. Now if it is smaller than 2" I happily just cut off and toss the excess and don't think twice. If it is larger I might think first and sew the alternate sides together and do something with them or come up with a different techniique
There is nothing that requires you to use a certain method. If you are happier with old school formulas and techniques, Someone else may have designed the project but it the work of our hands

To me the fold and sew is tricky to get the corner exactly square. I use the folded corner ruler but prefer the Accuquilt if I have the size die needed. I don't save the triangles cut when using the fold over method I have never felt guilty about fabric use or non use.

Instead of turning those left over triangles into tiny HST, I will use them to make QST. I now have about 2000 of them I am currently making a quilt with. They each came out at 2" squared, so will finish at 1 1/2" in each block. I am making blocks that have 16 in each block. What I will do with the block, I haven't decided. I was thinking along the lines of an Arkansas Crossroads quilt with the blocks. Anyway, it will be a delight to finish it and take it into our show and tell at our local quilt club, as I had a lot of those little triangles given to me in sort of a challenge to see what I could do with them. Those that know me know I can't stand to throw any of my fabric away, as it costs the same as the fabric I use, lol!

I agree with Linda. If the pieces are large, I tend to make HSTs with the cut off part, and then end up with lots of pinwheels. If the pieces are smaller than 2", I throw them away. I think I might try the folded corners ruler to see if I can achieve some semblance of accuracy. Thanks for the suggestion!
