OK--I checked to be sure, and was told there is someone on TO who uses these in place of Davis longs. The dimensions match, BUT they have the opposite top of the Davis needles--I believe the tops are round as opposed to the DL flat-sided needle, so you have to be careful to put the needle in the right way. Don't forget that the latest DVF took a 15 x 1 needle.

This is a white FW. You can see how different the bobbin winder is on the tan FW is, from the one on the white FW.
Also the Singer badge is much different on the 2 machines.

I've got a guess what's wrong question. There's a Singer 401 in my area for sale. The owner is selling very cheap because "they can't get it to turn on it just hums." Any guess what needs fixing? Motor replacement? I'm trying to see how much it would cost to fix and if it's worth buying.

The only thing about it is look at the card and the thread on the machine and beside the machine. I had 2 white ones in my possession and they were almost blue they were so white.

Here is an example of the white vs the tan. I found out from a friend that they had the Tan in the 1960's which that badge is from.

That's just plain weird! The cord is hard wired like the white FW too. HMMMM strange goings-on are afoot!
It looks like a white FW that has been painted tan. IMHO

Miz Johnny I know you know what you are talking about. I went to this site and see I can get 100 Pfaff Industrial needles for about $30, but I would rather find the original needles if I can. Are these Boye 10 or Davis Longs really hard to come by? As far as putting them in the right way, I think once I get used to inserting them, that would be no problem. I will keep this site in my favorites so I can order them.

What is "TO?" I am hesitant about ording 100 needles if I decide I don't want to keep this machine. I have the machine soaking with WD40 right now so I can get to the shuttle! I can't wait to try her out!

Quilt Addict if I decide I don't want to keep this machine, you can have it for what I paid, plus any parts I need to get! I don't think it needs anything except needles and bobbins, though!

Miz Johnny, you said the latest Davis Vertical Feed takes a regular needle. What years are you talking about? This machine is probably pre- 1900 to very early 1900. The patent date on the slide plate is 1886. The machine itself is in very good shape, minus a few decals. I can't find a SN nor a site to date the machine if I do find a SN?
