    Default Lettuce keeper?

I'm looking for a good way to keep leaf lettuce from wilting quickly and then me having to toss it. I like salad, but not every day and there is only dd and me, so one head of, say romaine, usually ends up half consumed and then tossed due aging. I did buy one of those Rubbermaid rectangle produce keepers, but not long enough and they do take up a lot of space in veggie bin.....any suggestions? Btw....same thing with green onions..end up throwing half the bunch of them away too! Grrrr!..

My Mom had a thing made by Tupperware that had a spike on the bottom, and the iceberg lettuce sat upright. I actually cannot remember if it made a difference. Just thought I'd mention it.

I warp my lettuce in paper towels and put them into a gallon plastic bag. Don't close it all the way. It keeps for a while longer.

yes, that Tupperware lettuce keeper was great for iceberg lettuce, but I prefer leaf lettuce...said to have vitamins.....I have one, but romaine just won't fit in it? hmm, I wonder if Tupperware might have a newer version for leaf lettuces.....will check it out!

Wash it well, cut it up and use a salad spinner to get the moisture out. It will keep much better dry because moisture is what ruins it, I think. I have 2 salad spinners, one in the rv and one in the house. Next time you grocery shop, check the housewares aisle for them or a thrift store often has them if you don’t want to buy new. And I have a 3rd one without the top ! Cut up watermelon or cantaloupe keeps longer because the juice drains away from the fruit through the inside bowl. I cover with a plastic bowl cover or “as Mom did” put a plate on top !

I have a friend who wraps hers in a damp kitchen towel and then puts them in a zip lock bag. She says they keep for a long time. I keep meaning to try it.

I like to make a BIG bowl of all prepared salad in the fridge. I wash and tear my romaine up into bite size pieces, lay it out on paper towels while I prepare all the other vegatables ( Gr. Onions, radishes, cauliflower, broccoli, red and yellow peppers etc.) to go into a salad. I put a paper towel in the bottom of the bowl to absorb any moisture left, toss all the ingredients together and put a paper towel on top of the bowl and put the bowl in a plastic bag in the fridge.
