301 Take-up lever
#41
Thanks, Tammi, it was cool to see how that works, but it didn't raise the TUL as needed-though it did lower it a bit. :-/
Maybe someone else already tried that to fix it and had it raised as high as it would go. I did find that if you turn the adjustment knob a long way to the left (if you are facing it,) it stops the hand wheel from turning at all.)
So, maybe I will run it in to the OSMG and see if he can do something with it.
Edited: Found out he won't be in until next week. Bummer. How frustrating. It isn't like I NEED this 301 to sew with, but I feel like I am "undone" while it is dysfunctional. I don't know how you folks with a dozen waiting to go into the "hospital" on your counters deal with that. Haha!

Did you try both directions? clockwise and widdershins? Where was the lever? On the downstroke as it hits the faceplate or on the upstroke? (ETA: This probably doesn't make sense. It works in my head but it's probably a "huh?" if you're not in my head. I'm assuming you're turning the handwheel toward you when you bring the TUL down to the point where it hits the faceplate, not backward. Yes?) If I can replicate it, I might be able to come up with a fix. Also, the directions from the SSS group that I posted in my last post "seems" to mention grabbing with your fingers and adjusting, not just turning your screwdriver. Perhaps a combination is worth trying. After that, if it doesn't work, I'd go with Candace's suggestion of ordering one online - I've had really good luck with Glenn Williams in Florida - and just replacing it and adjusting.
I feel the same when I have machines in pieces. The hardest time for me was when I was up in Montreal being certified with one of the brands. We took apart a machine one day, left it overnight then came back and reassembled. An unfamiliar machine in an unfamiliar shop and I had to leave it with its entrails all over overnight and hope I didn't forget anything. Even with pictures, it was an uncomfortable itchy feeling. The vintages though, I can leave apart for weeks if I have to now, since I know that I can put them back together. Heck, I have a featherweight that's been stripped down for painting for about 2.5 years and I still think I can put it back together.

with this, I'll apologize here to arch. and say I did get insulting, and after being insulted
at teh same time I do think the thread on that morse 2600 might show that's parts can be welded, re machined or reshaped back to a usable, functioning item.
even with this quote, if you have looked at your machine the wording is wrong. The adjustment is not directly behind the take up lever, in fact at the opposite side of the machine.
a postive can do attitude will get farther towards your goal, Than being the Driver of the naysay wagon

I HAVE looked at the machine, I've now done the adjustment, I also clarified where I had misinterpreted the instructions. The original reference was unclear and mis-worded. In my haste to help before someone - Sheri, or someone reading this later from a search - decided to bend it - I did not clarify what needed to be done. I have apologized for that - without negating my apology in the same paragraph - and corrected my statements.

I know this is kind of simple but is the screw on the nose plate holding the plate on a little high? Just something simple and I have seen it happen on some I have had on the bench.
maybe that will save someone some grief...
edit edit edit...
Sheri, I can see you got it fixed thanks to Tammi!!!

(Yes, I was turning the hand wheel towards me, or counter-clockwise. And the TUL was hitting the bottom opening where I showed in my very first picture on this thread.)
But...
Wheeee! Success!!! I couldn't leave it be and fiddled with it "one more time" before putting it away till next week! The adjustment you suggested/explained, Tammi, worked! I just had to mess with it more, experimenting with the face plate closed, then open, then closed, then stand on my head while holding my mouth just-so...! Ha! I am grinning from ear to ear, in spite of the leftover headache!
Thank you, thank you!!

Tammi, I am closer to this 301 working, but now have found a second issue. It is skipping stitches and the bobbin assembly seems to bounce around as it runs, as close as I can tell by watching and running it at the same time. (I did check my needle insertion and re-threaded everything twice.) Weird. So, I will be studying on that, now. When I get it figured out I will post you a photo of it sewing.
I am still smiling about that TUL solution, though!
