Stitchmaster clone could not even work in the standard case I found him in. His oscillating shuttle broke a hole in the bottom of the case. No wonder nobody would buy him.

Some of those cases were too shallow for some of the clones and some of the Singer 15s. Old Mr Ugly (a Singer 15 from 1888) had to have more room under him because one part moved way below. Mr. Ugly didn't set well without a case. I think they finally modified the design so it set better and the part didn't drag bottom - but then some clones were made just like Mr Ugly anyway. LOL. I sold Mr Ugly yesterday. sigh. I've seen people try to change out Singer 99 and something else too tall and leave a hole in the bottom of a bentwood case. I solved it by putting legs on the case and a more rounded hole in the bottom of the bentwood case. LOL

If the case is damaged the machine can be damaged. I got 10 free machines from a flood one time. All were in plastic cases. The cases were very damaged - rusted hinges & latches - lots of silt. All but the old Singer machines were damaged because they not only got wet they were put away wet and the damp did them in - rusted solid. The cases did more harm than good that time.

Miriam,

I think you are right about the plastic cases holding in the moisture. The HOTHER case bottom had gotten saturated due to a water leak in the bath tub in the next room. Yet in spite of it's condition there was no trace of rust on the machine. I was completely amazed by this.

Page 2 of this thread, post #20. The first two pictures is the "before" pics of the HOTHER case. The HOTHER is my mothers old JUKI made 15 clone. < See my avatar pic.
Here's a thread I did on it: { http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...d-t200795.html }.
