The Singer 301 was manufactured from mid 1950 to April 1951. Then they began the manufacture of the 301a from 1951-1959. The 301 should weigh about 16 lbs.

The Featherweight was made from 1933-1964 and is supposed to weigh 11 lbs.

There are several websites about the Singer 301 and literally hundreds about the Featherweight.

I posted pics of the collectable featherweight and the one made in the late 70s or early 80s ......my post did not make the board I will put pics of both here for you .... Robin

I think there are several different colors of the older featherweight ... some people have repainted them like purple, one red one I saw, and a pink one for breast cancer and a polkadot one was on ebay not too long bac ........

this is the older model ........

Now they have another Featherweight that is computerized and its a really neat machine. With all of the car companies bringing back the muscle car movement with the Challengers, Chargers, Shelbys, and the GT 40 it only right that they do the same with the sewing machine. And I think that they got it right this time and the quality is there like the originals had. Heck its like a 3/4 sized 500A with out the hassle of the cams and it is user friendly especially for the disabled.

I think that Singer is trying to make a good comeback and not fade away.

I have a vintage Singer repair man I go to and he highly recommends the 301's over the featherweights because they are gear driven not belt driven...and says..."don't yell at me ladies who own featherweights" They are better made and a better machine then the featherweights...
301 weight is 15-16lbs...has a carry handle and very light to transport.
The older Featherweights are gear driven too. It was the newer ones that were belt-driven; like my white one.
All featherweights are belt driven, meaning that it needs a belt to run the motor.

Why you are asking if this is a FW when you already own one?
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-125413-1.htm

Isn't that your answer.

You know how companies always improve machines and change the looks of them as they go along, with the flip up bed it could be mistaken for a newer version of a Featherweight. Look at the Last of the Singer 201's and 15's they looked like the 185J/K. They were even tan like some of the 185K's, the only difference was the 185's are a 3/4 machine and thats kinda hard to tell from a grainy photo on CL.

It would make things easier if all of the sites gave the same info. I know my FW is one but I'm still trying to find out all of the accurate infor on my other three which aren't FW; one is a 66 I have the manual. I want the year and place where they were born also. If you look at my FW closely you can tell that it is actually really dark green. My 5 yr old grandson noticed that first; pretty cool. I guess that is what happens when things are seen thru younger eyes. All of mine are beautiful but I haven't used any of them yet. Soon. Thank you Billy for all of the advice and info you give here on this board
