Funny story, when the kiddos were at home, they ate what was fixed, I wasn't a short order cook. At 20 and 14, they went out to dinner with the family the older one was a nanny for at the time. It was a Chinese restaurant, and several families were there together. They ordered family style, about one of everything on the menu. As the dishes went around the table, my two tried a little of everything. (Shark fin soup, octapus, blackened swordfish, etc) The mother told them that I did a great job of raising them because they would try anything. They both cracked up and all but fell off the chair. She finally asked what the joke was, the 14 year old told her that I don't eat anything out of the norm, they just got me to eat broccoli last year. So the moral to the story was, yes they ate what was in front of them, but apparently I didn't give them any variety, just the willingness to try different things. I may be picky, fussy, call it what you will, but I can always find something I like no matter where we go to eat.

At my house, my kids had two choices -eat it or don't. All four of my kids are willing to try anything even now. but, all four of my kids have allowed their children to choose what they eat, and none of the four can figure out why their kids are such picky eaters. My Grandma used to say "If I took the time to cook it, you can take the time to eat it'"

I always encouraged my son to eat different things, but he was never forced to eat something he didn't like. It was the same for me when I was growing up. Of course, if we didn't eat what was on the table, there wasn't going to be anything else fixed for us.
But oh my, I do love escargot. Never thought I would eat it, but was out with friends, had a couple of drinks, got brave, and so glad I did. Love chicken livers, fried, but not the gizzards. I have figured I would try something twice, because if I didn't like it the first time, it may have not been prepared very well, but if I don't like it on the second go round, that's it.

I'm with you!!!! My DH will eat anything, my daughter sends him pkg's of candy bugs from Japan...they look gross, but then again, they are real bugs. I still don't know why anyone would want to eat one but....to each his own I guess.
My daughter won't touch raw food since she studied biology in college and then on to lab degrees....everything has to be well done. When I was a kid we had to eat what was put in front of us or go hungry. period. To this day I won't eat liver..

When our eldest daughter was very small and she did not eat hamburger - it didn't matter what it was in she didn't eat it. So my husband in his infinite wisdom said she had to eat the meatloaf. So of course here come the tears, but she ate it and then within minuted started to throw up. I said it was his rule he got to clean it up. To this day she does not eat meatloaf, she will eat a hamburger with only lettuce and pickles, but rarely finishes them. He was brought up a member of the clean plate group and I was brought up as a member of "No Thank you" group. What was fixed for dinner was what was eaten or you went hungry, which she did from time to time. But no more throwing up at the dinner table.
There are a lot of foods I don't care for and so I have not problem with making a child taste it, they usually want to when they see everyone else eats it, but sometimes it is because they don't like it, or don't feel good.
My youngest daughter went to lunch with me one time, our salads had slices of pickled beets, she tried it and loved it, asked why I never served them before and it was because I don't like them. And I don't like ham hocks and beans - she loves them. You just never know.

Why can't you eat it? People believe that Sushi is just raw fish. NO, it is not! A California Sushi roll is rolled up rice with avocado, cooked crab and another veggie depending where you purchase the roll. NO raw fish. Try it, you will love it. However, there are sushi rolls with raw fish in them; it is just like eating tartar in a restaurant. Tartar is raw meat pulverized to disguise it, at least the sushi bars don't. Tks. for listening. There are a few foods my kids didn't like but those foods were not important to their diet so I didn't mind them not eating them. By first grade my kids helped themselves and had to eat all they put on their plate. They learned to start with small portions. My youngest decided she was a picky eater after a few kids at school refused to eat anything but chicken nuggets and that is what they ate everyday. So I stopped that by preparing foods she decided she wouldn't eat anymore for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I made her a sack lunch for school and no swapping or borrowing different food was allowed there. Her picky eating stage lasted about a week. LOL
