More great blocks... I have mine done, need to get the pictures taken today. Just home from more camping in the sun... hard to get back in gear.
I see another block assignment is posted thanks Anael!

thimblebug6000 08-29-2014 03:40 PM

Well... no pictures :( had to take the camera to the Dr today... it has to be sent to Toronto to hopefully clean out some sand between the lenses... I hate to be without my little friend but don't want to buy another unless this one isn't fixable. Oh well.... hopefully I'll remember to get pictures of these blocks once I get it back in 3 WEEKS!

Karen G 08-30-2014 08:17 AM

I"m working on blocks, just having a time trying to get photos from camera to computer. I will keep trying! Just finished baby blocks last night. I do NOT see a large tumbling block quilt in my future!

thimblebug6000 08-30-2014 03:31 PM

Just reviewing the new block assignment...yikes! Had to make time for two pillowcases & I appliquéd some little pirates from the free coloring pages on them for a b-day for 6 yr twins tonight... can't believe how much I miss my camera...oh well, will try to get started on a couple of the new blocks tomorrow as I'll be away Tues-Fri again this next week...no rest for the wicked :p

thimblebug6000 09-01-2014 03:40 PM

Managed to finish one block.... yeah... I know... it's not fun unless a picture gets posted..... I can't believe here I am waiting for my camera to come home from the Dr..... anyone else have pictures yet?

I am following this thread with great interest - some lovely blocks being done !. I am doing my blocks with another group ( which had started before this one ) and wondered if you would like to see my progress ?

If you click on any block it will enlarge it.

My Dear Jane is ready to be layered with a friend who has a long arm machine and she will just sew down and across the sashing and then I will add some hand quilting.
I am also making the blocks for The Loyal Union Sampler and Carol Doak's Stars. So there is always something on my machine !!!

Thanks for looking.

Anael 09-02-2014 07:26 AM

Oh Dotty, your blocks are gorgeous ! ! ! ! I've seen most of them before but I still admire them!! Thanks for showing again :)

Karen, your blocks are gorgeous!!! Love them all, even the not so tumbly blocks :D :D

thimblebug6000 09-06-2014 10:57 AM

Wonderful blocks Karen G. and auntjo!

thimblebug6000 09-08-2014 04:17 PM

Has anyone made F1 - Silver and Gold yet? I've spent an afternoon on it... had to stitch the inset squares & triangles by hand as it's definitely not a strong point of mine... BUT.... now.... there's like 24 seams coming together for that center seam....I put it into the junk pile last night & made an easier EQ5 version today.... BUT....then pulled this poor specimen out just in case there's hope for it yet. (& got a call my camera can be fixed for under $200, yeah!)

Thimblebug, did you sew all the way to the end of the seams? If you don't sew into tthe 1/4" seam allowance it's easier to get the centre of the block lay flat. Here's the one I made for my Sylvia.

Yours is beautiful! No I didn't sew into the ¼" seam allowance and I think that's what is confusing me so much, I just don't know what to do with all those points. Will look at it again with a fresh eye and maybe a little more patience ;)

Love your blocks thanks for your link!

Thimblebug, when sewn the points should spread out like flower petals. That way the block should lay flat. If not, use a hammer and beat it into submission :D :D

LAQUITA 09-09-2014 01:40 PM

Hello ladies,

I am wanting to just now START Syvial Bridal Sampler. In fact I just order the books today off Amazon. I think it's beautiful! A lot of my friends are doing the Dear Jane, but for some reason I just thought that looked to be toooooo overwhelming to me, whereas the SBS looked more manageable. Mind if I join you????

So I have a f ew questions for those of you that are the midst of this sampler already.
(1) if you know of Dear Jane how do you think the compares?
(2) how are you choosing your 'cOlor palette? Using scraps, what ever appeals to you for that particular block or are you sticking with the. Or traditional colors of the time?
(3) are your background fabrics all within the same family, say all beige tone of tone or white tone on tone or just whatever you have on hand? I'm trying to decide if I should choose one fabric for background & go with scraps for the rest or what. I haven't decided.

Thanks for the help/suggestions. Now to wait for my book to come in.
Anything I can be doing while I wait??????

:)

mirabelle 09-10-2014 03:06 AM

Hi Laquita I am doing both SBS and Dear Jane and SBS is by far the easier of the two. 6 inch blocks are very manageable and not a lot of applique. If you start at the beginning of this thread you will see everyone's blocks for inspiration, and quite a few showing their blocks all together.

As for me I am using the same background fabric, the same main fabric throughout and pulling different tone on tone fabrics for each block from my stash, and loving how it is coming together.

I hope your book arrives soon and you can join in at any time, please post pics of your blocks as you make them, we love to ooh and aah a lot.

A good idea is to finish some UFO's if you have any, as these SBS blocks can become addictive or maybe cook some frozen meals:D

I am falling behind at the moment but will catch up by the end of this month.

Karen G 09-10-2014 05:51 AM

I am using several different beige tone on tone fabrics for the backgrounds. The blocks in the book are too dull for my taste so I am using brighter fabrics in blues, greens, purples and corals. Someone is using Christmas prints. make it your own!

Anael 09-10-2014 06:03 AM

Hi LaQuita, welcome to the group!
Like Mirabelle said, the 6 " Sylvia blocks are very manageable, they're mostly regular blocks. The book provides directions and templates.
The DJ blocks are different ,no directions or templates, no regular blocks and they're 4.5" finished. Lots of tiny applique pieces.

Some use scraps as background and some have the same background. It's up to you what you want and what you have.

thimblebug6000 09-10-2014 07:13 AM

Welcome LaQuita! I'm using scraps of lights/darks blues and brown tones with a little yellow/gold thrown in. Look forward to seeing your progress with the blocks too.

The next three blocks on my journey to catch up. I admit that this is not my original Dresden Plate. My curves were uneven to the extreme. It went in the trash and I made points!

mirabelle 09-10-2014 10:42 PM

I am still here, I opened my book today and looked at New York Beauty, then I closed the book:D:D Maybe on the weekend when I don't have any distractions I can get back to my little blocks

Anael 09-10-2014 10:44 PM

Hahahaaa Mirabelle, isn't that a beauty?? :D :D :D

Karen, love your blocks! The modified Dresden Plate is lovely :)

Anael 09-15-2014 03:02 AM

Dear Sylvia makers :) :)

Next Sunday the new assignments will be posted :) Yes, so soon.......another 4 weeks are almost history! I would love to see some more blocks ;)

I might be out of sequence but these are the blocks I already had made for this month.

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul,,,,,,well after three attempts and much cursing I decided that I had given it my all and failed:o soooooooooooo I made Star of Destiny instead, hope the quilt police won't lock me up:D

Still have to catch up on the other 6 blocks but I will get them done!!!!

Anael 09-15-2014 09:26 PM

Auntjo, your blocks are wonderful! Look at all the points.......perfect!!!

Mirabelle, I hear you :) I did that block 2 or three times too and decided once in the quilt it might not be noticed it's wonky. I don't like that Peter/Paul thing!!! You made some gorgeous blocks :)

thimblebug6000 09-17-2014 06:29 AM

I've worked a little on the blocks, and happy to hear I'm not the only one who has plunked Peter/Paul back into the scrap box! I've looked at a few other options, but haven't made an alternate choice yet. Thanks for sharing your pictures everyone, the blocks are beautiful!

I am now ready to start September blocks. And it is still September!

Karen G 09-19-2014 02:26 PM

I made the log cabin block because I was frustrated with the orange peel. I tried the pieced version (several times) After sewing and unsewing three or four times, I needed something that I could manage easily. Then I returned to the orange peel and appliqued it. Not sure if I like the coral in the hunter's star, may redo that one.

thimblebug6000 09-20-2014 07:30 AM

So many lovely blocks again today ladies, thanks for sharing them. And Anael I'm very impressed with your Peter/Paul block!

Anael 09-21-2014 11:31 PM

Karen, I love the blocks you made. I like the coral in the hunter's star. Great idea to applique the orange peel :)

Thank you Thimblebug.....it's absolutely not what I wanted it to be but it has to do. It's already in the quilt!!

Anael 09-26-2014 06:52 AM

My dear Bridal workers :D :D

I skipped week 33 and 34.......I'm so sorry! What do you want? It doesn't make any difference and I think it might be confusing to insert those weeks into the next assignment.
It only means when you think you're finished..............you're not :) :) :)

laurafet 09-26-2014 08:02 PM

Thanks Anael. I thought I had just missed some somewhere and they would get done at the end. We all have senior moments, including those who are not seniors!
