I inherited mine from a family member. I love it. It had not been oiled, etc., in years so it was almost frozen. After much work, it sings now, and I use it often.

I have to chuckle at this thread!! "WHY are they so expensive??!!" say a huge group of people who love them, buy them at every opportunity, and wouldn't part with them for the world!! YOU are the reason!! Wish I could say WE but I haven't found one yet, LOL!! I am struggling along with my Kenmore 185J Leadweight - small in size but makes up for it in poundage.

I do not think people are buying them like hoarders , they are cute little machines and people just like them as they work well and take up very little room, people also like to get all the variations , etc , so I think here are multiple reasons why they are in such demand and somewhat expensive

There is a quilt shop near me that has two FWs for sale at nearly $500 each! Nope, not buying. I had the opportunity to get two several years ago in the $250-$260 price range, and my DH came home from an auction with one, having paid $175 for it...and yes, they all work beautifully. I also purchased a Singer 99K from a friend who got one at an auction (she does not sew), but the motor seems to have died. I will get it serviced and see what they have to say about it, and if the motor truly is dead, I plan on converting it to a hand-crank.

No, Lynnie, I don't think it would be. I think it will be a little slower to use due to the manual power, but I'll know for sure after I have my 99K back from the shop.

Just wrote about FW in Lynnie's other post but forgot to mention there is a black FW for sale in Montreal for $230.
Looks good so I told a young sewing friend about it but so far she hasn't had time to go see it. I own 4 so don't need anymore or I would have gone for it while I was at Mc Gill U graduation last week. Happen to look on Kijii and there it was.

I really want a Featherweight! A local guy on CL has one, no case or accessories, for $250, but just serviced. Not sure I need accessories but think a case is appealing.

I'd also been checking CL in the Lexington, KY, area prior to a trip with my grown daughter. Found one with case for $300 there and he said he could meet me somewhere convenient.)

I was driving down to KY but flying back. I was leery about trying to bring the FW back as carry on. If you don't know what it is, the little black case certainly might look like a bomb. Heck, it's no clock, but you just never know when a "sewing machine" might alert the authorities.( Yes, my imagination is overactive. )

I had to talk myself out of it. Looking back, I'm glad I did. I ended up having only 6 minutes to change planes in Charlotte (a long fast walk from Gate E to B). Had I been stopped, I might've missed that flight. So....I'm being patient for another deal around here. They're listing on CL (Balto, DC and souther PA for 250-595.). My limit is 300.
