This is such a sad story that keeps getting repeated over and over. It seems like the bigger (and maybe older?) the guild is, the less open to newcomers they are. On several occasions my guild friend and I would notice a newcomer walking/standing around at a meeting not knowing what to do next or where to sit and we would wave them over to sit with us. We knew how it felt to be "invisible". Seemed like we were the only ones who cared to do this ... and our guild was huge. We also would then give them the name of the President of the Newcomers group in town so they might join that too. I visited a FL guild when I first moved there several years back and the same thing happened to me that happened to you. No one even acknowledged me. Plus, part way through the meeting, the President announced that she was leaving her post and walked out. Did I join that guild? No way!!! What is it with some women's groups? I will stick with my small quilt group for now. As someone else suggested, it might be good to notify the guild to let them know what happened. Things cannot be changed if they don't know about it.

I don't remember being welcomed in either of my 2 guilds.
If I wasn't it wouldn't bother me. I went to see what other quilters were doing, attend workshops and programs and to hear about quilting stuff.
I'm not keen on stranger friendliness.

Over time I made very good friends in both Guilds

I had the same thing happen to me recently at a guild meeting. Not sure that I want to go back. I went looking to meet new people who share the same interest. Disappointment!!!

I had the same experience once that was enough for me.
Now there about 9 of us get together twice a month and have fun. We do a lot of charity quilts, sew, stamp and just enjoy. We learn from each other.

Makes me wonder if I want to be in a quild.

This type of group would not be for me. My question - how do you find a good guild?

You start your own group. Put an ad in the local paper, if you are on a social network, set up a meeting with whoever will come to the place you arrange to meet, put a notice in your church newsletter or on the bulletin board at work. It certainly won't hurt anything to see whether anyone is interested. Be willing to start with two or three and go from there. froggyintexas
