I actually like to darn socks. Hubby can put holes in new ones with his steel toe work boots. I finally found a brand that holds up better. But I'll only do them so many times before they get pitched in the "darn bin". He's sure of always getting new ones for his birthday and Christmas.

...the lost art of mending (especially sock darning) and the complete inability of people when it comes to polishing shoes!
I do both....My coworkers call me cheap to not buy new socks instead of darning them..I replace pockets with old jeans fabric, put in new zippers in pants....They just buy new ones.
It just gives me more $$$$ for quilting stuff

But what really has me reminiscing is the old mimeograph copies. Somewhere I still have a recipe to make a pan of jelly stuff that will hold ink long enough to press multiple sheets against it so you can have copies of whatever.

Does this ever take me back! I had not thought of this in a long time. I may have had a recipe for this myself, but no longer have it. It would be neat to make a pan of this up with some children today and let them see how it is done.

I just can not imagine my husband NOT polishing his shoes before going to work, and when needed stripping them down on Saturday night and then spending all day Sunday and Monday putting a new shine on them!

There are alot of things that have seemed to dissapear since my grandmother and great aunt died. Crocheting beging one. COOKING being the other! HOWEVER I still do both!

Now, with computers/printers and photocopiers, putting the time and effort into that would be ridiculous.

What other arts have been lost to technology?
Wow, what a wonderful school memory mimeograph copies brings back. I loved the smell of them when they were "fresh of the press" so to speak. Even today, I can still remember the fragrance. Maybe some candle company can re-capture the scent, along with apples, chalk, and sunshine and call it School Daze. I would buy it! Thanks for bringing back the memory.

As for lost arts (and crafts), I can't think of any, except maybe tatting or lace making. Some people still do them though.

Gelatin monoprinting is used by textile and mixed-media artists all the time. It's not a lost art at all, it just moved to a new address.
