My 86 y/o mother had a scheduled appt with her ortho for her chronic knee problem. Three days before the appt she injured her arm, was seen in the ER and told to follow up with her ortho. Common sense says "oh good-she already has an appt" right? Wrong!! When I called to tell them about the ER visit so they could get that report I was informed we would have to make a SEPARATE appt for the ER follow up!! Do you know how hard it is to get an 86y/o with a bad knee and shoulder into my SUV for one appt let alone 2 appts? Luckilly (SP?) the receptionist tells me they have a cancellation for the appt immediately following my mom's so she can be seen for both problems. In other words, they will bill her ins for 2 visits. Well, being the bitch I am, I went in the exam room with her and kept asking question after question until we used up 2 15minute appt slots. I work for a GP and we have pts who bring in lists of 10 problems a visit and we address them all!! Specialists are a breed unto themselves.

I sure hope this guy in not in the Boston area. The doctor may be the greatest in knowing medical stuff, but I would definitely not want to go to his practice. Time for you SIL to get his name out to others so they don't have to have the same experience!

Arrogant doctors need to be jolted into real life. In my breast cancer support groups, we talk about doctors a LOT, and we tell newbies that IT'S OKAY TO FIRE YOUR DOCTOR!!! We're paying them - they work for us - and if we don't like how they're talking (or NOT talking) to us, we can fire them. Fortunately, I have had caring, NOT arrogant surgeons and oncologists. I always have a list of questions - and my doctors WANT to answer all my questions.

I used to take my Mom to her dr appointments, and I printed 2 copies of my questions - and handed 1 to her doctor. The first time, he told me,'I wish ALL my patients would do this.' THAT is what a REAL doctor who's truly interested in helping his patients should say and feel.

This has brought to mind an experience I've had in the past. I hurt my hand and after 2 weeks of not being able to use the 3 fingers on my left hand, I went to my doctor. He tried for 2 weeks (xrays, etc) and then sent me to a specialist. I went to that guy for 6 months! (GASP!) and finally I'd had my fill. The next to last appointment, he chewed out an assistant until she had tears in her eyes....right in front of me! So the next time, I'd seethed for 2 weeks, he said "well, we'll give it another month and see how it's doing"....well, it was WORSE than it had been 6 months before. So I responded....I said "that's not adequate". He was stunned and said "what?". He asked if I wanted to go to another doctor and I said yes, but that I would find the doctor and he would refer me. As a parting shot, I told him he was VERY unprofessional to chew his staff out in front of clients. WELL, I DID go to another doctor. He immediately took off the splint, said that was making it worse, and put me in physical therapy ....5 treatments and I've had no more problems with my hand.!!!!

Pass this along to your sil- if she complains about this doc, she has saved a few patients the trauma and pain she received by seeing this man.
I can't say this is unbelievable, bc I know first hand there are ppl/dr.s like that out there.
If the office manager is in HIS office, she doesn't need to bother talking to that person. They are paid by the dr. to make ppl shut up or go away.
He needs to be reported to the medical board, and I doubt if she will hear any more about it, but somewhere down the line, when they get enough complaints, he sure will!
I was sent to the E.R. one time, by a physician, and the treatment I endured when I got there, got the attending physician fired, bc a nurse reported him! I had to go back to that hospital for paperwork a week later, and nearly got hugged by everyone in that department. They all knew my name!

Just cause he is a doctor doesn't mean he likes his job, sounds like a real
A** to me! Pity she had to waste her time with this jerk!

I agree - but they deal with a very vulnerable section of society who deserve to have their doctor have a modicum of bedside manner. At a minimum, I would expect basic human courtesy.

I am a snotty rude Dr's worst nightmare.. and I LOVE it!! I've been a nurse for 38 years and I work in the operating room, I've also worked on a telephone hotline where all anyone knows about you is your voice, so it's VERY important that you deal with people in a kind, understanding manner. I've also worked in a Dr's office.. and yes, he was an Orthopaedic surgeon.. and let me tell you, if he EVER tried to dress me down in front of a patient we would have been in his office VERY quickly and the shoe would be on the other foot... OK, I'll admit there are people who do not deal with other people. well, in my opinion they should be pathologists.. Yes, you should report him to the State Board of Orthopaedic surgeons, and file a formal complaint, and with anyone else who will listen.. if he is part of a group, call the office AND send a letter of complaint to the group. They may not be aware of his attitude with patients and may just be waiting for enough"ammo" to get rid of him.. PLEASE.. help them out.. Believe me I've worked with some prima donas in my life and that crap just does NOT cut it with me. Everyone has skills and talents and we're all put on this earth to help each other through life one way or another.. they're just NOT that special!!!!! sorry for the long tirade.. this subject just gets my goat.

If he starts pushing surgery then you know he is knife happy & a money grubber to put it to the insurance company. I quit my last doctor because he would not look me in the eye. I think he is an SOB & I would tell him to his face. Some are saints some are ah's & jerks.
