Is your glass half empty or half full?

If you ever need to vent, you know how to PM me! There is a reason for everything, and it doesn't mean we are not greatful for what we have or who we are.
Perhaps our site is the only souce one has to share something with, depending on how you see it. If one is unable to share, regardless of the reason, this is unacceptable to me.
Are we not here to help, whether it be quilting or some other aspect of someones life? We can't assume we know things about a person on the other side of these forums.
May I share the following from Ane Morrow Lindbergh:
I do not believe that sheer suffering teaches. If suffering alone taught, all the world, would be wise, since everyone suffers. To suffering, must be added mourning, and understanding, patience, love, openmess amd the willingness to remain vunerable.
In everyone one there is something precious, found in no one else; so honor each man for what is h him - for what he alone has hidden within him - for what he alone has, and none of hos fellows. HISIDIC SAYING.\
New Zealand writer Katherine Mansfield 1888-1923---
I ALWAYS FELT THAT THE GREAT HIGH PRIVILEGE, RELIEF AND COMFORT OF FRIENDSHIP WAS THAT ONE HAD TO EXPLAIN NOTHING.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and these are mine for whatever it is worth. :)

And I do believe that people need to vent. Perhaps we shouldn't, but I think we do need it. It comes down to what or rather where is an appropriate place. You wouldn't walk into the middle of a large party and start complaining loudly about life in general. At least, I hope people wouldn't! LOL You would wait until you're in a comfortable setting with a select friend or two.
The general areas of the board are the large party, the comfortable setting with close friends is the PDA section.
The thought that this might be the only contact some people have with the outside world is often thrown about, and while I understand the sentiment, I think it's a little dramatic. This may be one of the few contacts some people have, but it's not the only one.
We all have a common passion, and that connects us as friends. But in general terms it's a fragile friendship built on that one common interest, some of us having nothing else we share, just that one thing. And as such it's a friendship that needs to be treated carefully, not taken for granted, one that needs positivity to thrive and grow stronger. It can't be treated the same as the friends you've grown up with, shared life's joys and pains with.

On this subject I believe it is a matter of self governing yourself. I ask myself if the point is to help someone, give a different perspective, or to tear someone down. That helps me make decisions in all walks of my life. A lot comes with getting older and a lot has to do with things that have happened in my life.
My momma taught me to keep my mouth shut if I couldn't say something nice, and I notice with our changing world today it is still a great motto to live by. It hasn't always been easy and I haven't always been able to comply, but I try.
I try not to hurt people's feeling and if I have I am sorry.
Some topics I just run away from. Like where you should and should not buy fabric... I won't even go there because there are very strong feelings elicited on the forum. I understand both sides and I definitely understand not having money to buy anything I want to. I took it for granted when I was able to get what I wanted, and that has definitely changed.
Anyway, this is just my opinion. I don't want to sound like I am standing on a soap box.
Thanks for listening.

i wish i could hop the first plane to New Zealand. i'd find BlueChicken and give her the biggest, fattest, squeeziest, squishiest, squashiest hug ever!
i'm so happy to see this topic i'm getting misty. :-)
i don't like seeing the rants, raves, vents and other misery that is becoming so common here. i especially don't like it because i can't indulge in the luxury of ignoring it. as a moderator, have to go in to check it out. i too often have to keep going back to monitor the "progress" of the "conversation". in short, i cannot pretend it doesn't exist.
several good reasons have already been offered here that demonstrate why such topics are not appropriate here. i'd like to add one more - admittedly selfish - reason i don't like them. i sometimes end up so ticked off by a rant that before i know it, i'm caught up in the anger and fire off a rant of my own against the rant. now that's irony in a nutshell. :hunf:
i love this suggestion. it's what i wish i accomplished in every case. i will be grateful beyond measure to anybody and everybody who can help us make it happen. ;-)
i'm tickled pink to see that i'm not the only one who feels that way!

I come here to learn quilting and to ask opinions, sometimes on quilting things and sometimes on other things. Its nice to get opinions from people from all over on some things (like my accutane post). But, as for negative things and personal things I keep them personal. I think this should be a HAPPY PLACE!!!! And for the most part I think it it is a happy place.

One time I posted a topic with a question and I had no intention for it to be taken the wrong way in which it was. I tried several times to explain what I was really trying to say, was not the negativity most people were responding with. I finally had to repeat my idea for the last time and let it go. After that, I don't create topics where people can run the negative way with them.
I can't help but think there are questions asked here just to provoke thought and then some start adding a negative tone and it goes like wild fire. I agree with you Blue and hope this helps all of us make this a better site.
