And THAT's what a baby quilt is supposed to look like.;-)
I also can't find the pic I wanted to show, but it was equally graphic.
I never make them to go with some "theme" as I really want to encourage it to be used as only a baby can.
Great bright happy stars!

The young mommies are telling me brown and green or brown and blue. The kind of pastel colors.
I like brights. Here is a link to 5 baby quilts I just made and send out. All but 2, pink border and scrappy top I traded for, are for boys.

Christina, that's definitely bright!
I made a baby blue crib quilt for my DGS. It had appliqued teddy bears in striped overalls and plaid shirts. That was a lot of work. He is 3 now and in a twin bed so am planning a twin size that he can use forever. It will be browns, blues, and greens with some orange and yellow. A scrappy quilt.
I'm also going to do a rag quilt that he can drag around and play with.
I think whatever colors you like and are inspired to make is the correct choice. Don't worry about what someone else is doing. Yours will be better anyway.

This quilt is just like some of the young mothers describe to me.
I make the baby quilts usually a brighter and more thematic so it can be used as a lap quilt later on but I think the brown, blue and green pastel is the big thing right now for baby quilts. I was told the same at the quilt store. the lady there showed me what the young mommies were picking.

This baby quilt is one of our first finished quilts, and uses the baby blue and light green you are pondering. I think it is completely appropriate for a "big boy." He may not like it when he's a teenager, but we can make him another one for his 12th birthday.
If you want completely timeless, Americana is the way to go for a boy IMHO.
