Do you remember your 1st quilt?

Working with satin is like trying to put socks on an octopus.
My first quilt came from the cover of a magazine, (You know I was in trouble right there....) and was a queen size with applique tulips in each block. I had no idea how to applique. (still don't, mostly.) Heck, I had no idea how to make a quilt, but I persevered and sort of finished that quilt. I ended up tieing it rather than quilting and it wasn't pretty. It put me off quilting for years. I don't think I made another quilt until I came across a Rail Fence pattern at least 10 years later and thought I'd give it another try. That one came out a lot better and I've been at it ever since, with a few breaks here and there.
Not sure whatever became of my first quilt.

My first quilt was a gift for my then boyfriend, now husband of many years. He had a Ford Pinto with a Levi's interior package meaning it was all upholstered in denim. It was a whole cloth quilt. Two pieces of denim sewn right sides together then turned, so no binding, and no batting. I quilted it in six inch squares. One square had a pocket that I salvaged from an old pair of my jeans. I also added the leather label from those jeans. We used it for the beach and picnics while we were dating. It still rides around in the back of his Subaru.

Since I haven't been quilting that long and tend to hang onto things, I still have my first quilt that I made about 15 years ago. It was a sampler and I still use it in the study on my desk chair. The colors aren't great, but it's a cute little quilt. I did a pretty good job on it, too! I did that quilt and a couple more, then went back to mostly doing wearable art for a while. Making quilts has been sporadic for me until lately. I've done more quilt lately, but I'm feeling the *itch* to do some wearable art. I would like a new jacket!

I tried to make a quilt as a teenager, hand sewing scraps together. It never made it. About ten years later, I attended a Bicentennial Quilt Show where I learned of a beginners class at a local community college. We made a sampler wall-hanging of techniques, as well as a block of the week for a sampler class. We hand quilted the blocks individually on a square frame. I still have both of those (finished) quilts, but some of the fabrics in the sampler have worn out.

I remember my first quilt. I made it in 2012 and I made it as a surprise to give away at my family reunion. I was quite proud of it, but I don't think the recipient was very impressed. No matter. When I asked my brother if he wanted me to make him a quilt like it, he said yes. He loves that quilt.

My first quilt was a jelly roll race quilt. I saw the video on you tube when I was researching quilting. It's only been a few years, it's in my camper and I use it all the time. Still love it. I used Moose on the Loose. It's adorable.

My first was in 1976, an Alphabet quilt. I drew a letter and a picture for each letter onto muslin blocks and embroidered them- the drawings were pretty funny- my alligator looked like a platypus.
I stitched the blocks to a dark royal blue polyester blend fabric- because that’s what I had. it was a quilt for my new baby girl. I picked up a really thick- lofty, polyester batting and used the same blue on the back. Pretty sure I tied it. I had no idea what I was doing but had been sewing clothes for years. She grew with that quilt and loved it.

I just started quilting in 2018. My first quilt was for my nephew's new baby. I enjoyed the piecing, but the guy from the local quilt store who did the longarm, put the backing on VERY lopsided. I was devastated when I saw what he did. His response: "You didn't tell me to put it on straight." Wow. Luckily, I was able to salvage it. My nephew and and his wife loved it. I wish I could post a photo, but this site NEVER wants to upload my photos no matter how small I make them.
Since that first quilt, I've addicted. I've joined the local guild, attended quilt shows, and pieced more than a dozen quilts in the last year. So far I have taken them to a local woman for the longarm work, but I'm going to try quilting the next one at home.
