Thank you for that link!
I have seen that done before, and you have supplied the needed option.
So often, there is a practical solution for the techniques we want to try ... now, did we get into the circle discussion because of one of the doll quilt exchanges where someone received a wonderful Orange Peel quilt???
WIll go look for that link, so that all can enjoy the quilt AND the technique she used to make the circles ...

The most frequently used ruler is my 12 x 6. Squaring up or fussy cutting large blocks - 12.5 x 12.5, then the 3 x 18 and 5 x 18. The 1 x 6 is great for marking my lines for hst and making binding strips. I do have others for specialty cuts, and the circle template.

If this link doesn't take you to page 25, and scroll down the page, then it will unload you at the first page ... and you can click on next or even the number of the page you want to go to (found on a line, upper right of the page, just above the blue title bar) ... if I remember correctly, if you want to see all the quilts, I started on page 15, or maybe 19 ... but the doll quilts are well worth perusing just to see the different techniques.
On the first page of the above thread, you will find links that will take you to all of the doll quilt exchanges ... it is a journey well worth you time to take a gander at - - just for the amazing creativity of the quilters on this list.
I know you don't need convincing, but the doll quilts exchanges are as good a quilt show as you will find anywhere, in my opinion <g>

I resisted posting on this thread for so long
But, now I am finding all sorts of rulers I didn't know were out there - - When I mark HST, I use a 6x6
I marvel at those who use the rulers with 1/2" extra ... only because if I use one, I inevitably turn it ...
One of my useful "tools" that I use often is the June Taylor Shape Cut ... I bought the Shape Cut Plus, which allows you to cut in 1/4" increments if you are very clever and haven't lost the directions <g> but, the greatest part of the Shape Cut Plus is that it is 18" wide ... versus the twelve inches in the Shape Cut ...

Hmmmm I can relate to alot of the responses here.
1]In the past I used to buy to many gadgets and then didn't learn to use them espically if it doesn't come to me right away.
2} I really need to learn to use what I have & have vowed not to buy more until then.
3]Would love to take some classes.
4] I love multi purpose tools.
I am a self taught quilter and just now finding the patiences to REALLY learn to quilt...by that I mean using the bais, the templates, patterns etc.
I am a person that has to be shown, I don't have enough patiences to sit & read instructions, I am working on that...slowly. :(
Gee that was a long winded answer...sorry-I think the coffee must have kicked in lol.
That being said I have 4 basic rulers & a couple square temples, a couple rotary cutters, several cutting mats & scissors galore.

Hello, I am a tool conneiuseur and have just added to the problem.
I honestly did not realize how many words on a page I can read, because my chosen way to read is one word at a time.
(I don't understand what enjoyment there is in being able to read Gone with the Wind in three days - -while in the SECOND grade! kids! ) Anyway, I guess I happened to see a ruler - - Flying Geese x 4
so, while I was down to the LQS today, I perused their rulers (as though I might have missed something??????) there was one of those rulers hanging, right in front of me
It is amazing how quickly I can do the pros and cons in my head ... BUT! I am quick! Pro - - Done by Lazy Girl and while I don't know how to use the ruler she designed for Peaky and Spike, but I did see her demonstrate it once more than a decade ago! And, I have the book <g>
Con - - it is a clear ruler with black lines ...
oh, decisions, decisions, I put my hand out to see what was the big deal, and SOLD!!! That is the finest way to make flying geese I have EVER known ... I just don't have all the formulas, and here they were in a seven inch ruler ! ! !
Most of you probably didn't know me when I made 1,064 flying geese units utilizing this method JUST to get it into my head ... NOW! <sigh> My flying geese journey is at an end .... but?
what is that cute little package over there?
hmmm ... it's just a little thing, and there is that pastel coloring thing going on with it ... but ... it SAYS "Mini 6.5 x-blocks ... whatever those are.
Pick up the package, flip it over .... hmmm...cannot see the ruler at all! hmmm... but, it is blue ... just saw a verse referenced: Psalm 90:12
but just noticed it and it is on the desk next to me ...
for your convenience, I looked up the websites for my newly acquired tools:
http://www.quiltqueendesigns.com/X-Blocks.html
http://www.lazygirldesigns.com/
it is too late to make me feel guilty ... besides, I try not to practice that for more than five minutes at a time ... for my part, I will now go into recovery, finish lunch, look over the two books I bought ...
catch y'all later <wave>

suggestion: I have this transparent, um, 'tape', I'll call it. It sticks to your rulers and is 1/4" wide.
I can't use my rulers that have the 1/2" extra added without using this, bc...well, bc I would screw things up!
So, if you take two strips of this transparent stuff, and put on the 1/2", it lets you know at a glance, where to stop, for 12" or whatever your ruler width is.
I know why they put the extra on there, but it would help if they used black markings for the 12" and then use, say blue, for the extra 1/2".
You heard it here first
Now, about confessions: I do use most of my rulers, haven't gotten to a few of the diamond, etc. smaller ones...not avoiding them, just haven't had time!
Something I am guilty of doing, is buying things with books, that I don't have time for, yet, and saying, "when I get caught up, I am going to study that, and make...."
I just don't have the knack for doing one thing at a time! In my own defense, I have accepted that I never will either
Edit: OOPS! Forgot to say this transparent stuff is colored! VERY important to know, or it sounds like I am saying its just clear. It works fantastically. Sometimes I just put a tiny piece of transparent tape on the end to keep them from coming up with usage. Try it, you'll like it.
I think I bought this in Joann's. Comes in a pkg. of three rolls, 1/4" wide: yellow, lime and orange.
