How much are you willing to pay for a pattern?

I think the price of patterns has gotten way too much. I recognize the designer's work, but they are usually a few sheets of paper and I prefer to make up my own patterns or maybe combine a couple of oldies, or check out the freebies on the internet. If they are cute weiner dog patterns all the above goes out the window.

I pay up to $10 for patterns and I do buy a few each year. I've been very happy with some of them and haven't used the others. I do not like buying downloadable patterns as I only have a black and white computer and sometimes the color on the pattern makes a big difference.

I cut patterns out of quilting magazines and we know the prices there.....have purchased dozens of books, none more than $25....and once in a great while a pattern packet from a quilt store. If I'm interested in the pattern and want to make it correctly without banging my head against the wall and crying, then I invest in the pattern. Saves me from trips to the emergency room for concussions!!

I mostly hand applique. These patterns cost more. However, I can purchase a book with 25 patterns and instructions in it for $25.00 or less than that on amazon. I can also purchase similiar patterns from individuals on line for as much as $15.00 per blocks/pattern and spend $80.00 for the whole set to make the whole quilt. I can't draw a circle so that leaves me dependent on others for patterns.

I don't buy quilt patterns but have bought a few things like a tote bag pattern, etc. & have not paid more than about $5 for that sort of thing. Generally I can find something free on the web. If I'm looking for a particular type of pattern I can usually find it online with some detailed searching. Once I saw a darling baby quilt that the blogger released every month on her blog. After she had posted all the monthly blocks she then offered to sell the blocks. Well, it was about a 4 year old blog but I went back to her old blogs where she had posted the monthly blocks & printed them off of her site (she did not remove them from her site)...lucky me. It took me some time to figure out that I could find them but it allowed me to get the block patterns without having to pay for them. Otherwise, I think she was charging $5 for each block & it would have cost me about $60 ... no way I would do that!

I believe the designer deserves to be paid for the inspiration and mental labor they have put into making the pattern for us. If you look at the amount you would pay for a dinner out or just to go see a movie or have your toenails painted (not criticism, just an example), why can you not spend a few dollars for something that will give you hours (days?) of pleasure and produce something beautiful ?!
