I agree, keep it, make another for the gift.
I firmly believe our quilts (mine, anyway) have spirits of their own. Mine usually let me know when they are done, even if it hasn't grown to the point I was planning; or if they don't like the border fabrics I chose; or if the setting needs to be changed when the blocks go up on the design wall.
Sometimes mine are downright pushy and rude and let me know they really don't enjoy being around "those" fabrics. But they redeem themselves when they let me know they love me so much they really want to stay home with ME! One in particular loudly objected to being sold! It's still with me, too, even after that temptation, LOL :D

I thought I was the only one that my quilts talk to. They tell me who they should go to and they have VERY strong opinions. :)

You know, I've felt that way too. But, why should you feel guilty. You made it. Unfortunately for them, you really love your work and would definitely appreciated much more than they probably would. I don't make quilts for myself either. So, if I really loved one I made with the intension of giving it to someone else, I feel I deserved it. They will never know to question you about it. DON"T FEEL GUILTY. Haven't you ever bought something for someone and didn't end up giving it to them and got them something else?

I had a VERY hard time letting my first commission quilt go. Since I was charging a LOT of money for it, I was extra careful with the construction and it was my best work to date (and got praise from my long-armer and she doesn't give that out lightly), and it turned out really beautiful...
But the recipient (it was a surprise birthday present for someone) even 3 years later, still considers it a "work of art" and they are so happy to have it, I stopped "missing" the quilt.
And I'm going to be making another one in the same pattern for my niece for her wedding next spring.

Yes, I have done the same thing as far as keeping a quilt I had made and did not want to give it to the family member I had made it for. Eventually, I decided to send it to my niece and she was very grateful but I sent the quilt with regret. I think I would like to make another with same pattern but I did part with it. You are not selfish at all.

You have every right to keep it. After making my immediate fgamly 12 quilts altogether, I started to make myself a wallhanging with all my scraps. Where is my wallhanging? Not finished for over 18 years. You better keepthat quilt for yourself. You'll be glad you did.
