Yardage purchases when buying for your stash
#13
I started out buying 1/4 yard. I'm now up to buying 2 yards. With two yards, you'd still need more fabric for a top, but you have a base fabric to work from. I don't buy fabric for the back until the top is done.

Me personally I usually buy for projects because yardage varies from quilts. If its something I like I might buy2-3 yards to use for small projects but what I have found is I end up not having anything to use random fabrics for so I have tried to stop just buying random fabrics unless I have a quilt in mind, when I find fabric I like, I raid my patterns and buy my own kits from the fabric and coordinating ones from the line. This ensures I have enough and have coordinating fabrics. I might buy a small amount extra if I can see using it for a small bag, pincusion, or other small projects. I find it easier to just make my own kits from fabrics I like

I've married quite a few bolts, so does that make me a fabric bigamist? I just buy what I like and if it's relatively cheap I buy several yards..or whatever is on the bolt. We have a favorite quilt shop that sells everything for $3.95 a yard. She has some that is $1.95 and some for $.99. This is not trendy stuff but I always find fabric to follow me home. The cheaper stuff is usually not what I want, but once in a while ...! I do buy fat quarters, I love them. Mostly, I just love fabric!!

I buy any where from 3 to 6yrds. I've gone to buy 8ydrs, or 12-15 yrds for backing. But not very often. Mostly 3-6 yrds. I know what you mean, by haveing it lay around. I may get the urge to refold my stash. That's not very often, to much stash.

I normally do lap sized quilts. If I want it for a main print or background I usually get 2 to 3 yards. If I think I may want it to have a supporting role in a top I'll get a yard or 2. If I just have to have it for no good reason I get a half yard and fold it up for my FQ stash that is both FQs and half yards.

I buy a lot of 1 yards and fat quarters. But I tend to like what I consider scrappier quilts.
If it is a backing or the main focus, I will get a bit more. But rarely have I gotten more than 4-5 yards. However, I just got to go to a textile factory sale to the public and got one cream and one mottled blue bolt -- 15 yards each. The prices were just too good not get something!
But generally I stick to one yard.

As a recovering fabriholic - I think if I was going to start over - I would buy for specific projects.
I don' t even want to think about how much money I have spent on stockpiled fabrics.
( I have already given away a couple of cars full of fabric.)
