I do have ecru in the top. I have so many bobbins filled with different greens, reds, aquas and orange that I used to sew down my appliqués using a blanket stitch from last years BOM from the quilt show. I'm using them up. I was hesitant at first but no problem so far. When they are done I will go back to Bottom Line grey. I only use the same color on top as in the bottom when doing machine applique.

I am using a light grey/silver color. It is blending with my fabrics just fine!

I'm using taupe, top and bottom. It's working well. I just finished sewing my double diamond pinks to the neutrals, pressed and trimmed dog ears. Now on to clue #3 and the greens! (Tomorrow, that is.)

I'm using white top and bottom. My neutral is white. I have never had an issue with using white.

I'm using a medium gray top and bottom. Just had a friend pick up a spool for me. It was $13! Got an email from craftsy the other day and they had it on sale for $9 something. I'm getting 3 more. That should last me quite a while.
I had quite a time getting my clue 2 units to come out right. I'd sew several and then look at them. 1/3 would be good, 1/3 too wide of a space between the colors and 1/3 overlapped a bit. Dang! I took my time and was so careful in my cutting and stitching. Pretty frustrating. I have about 10 that still need to be fixed but they are getting put away for a while.
Can't wait to cut into my greens tomorrow!

I always use Aurifil grey thread for all my piecing, it works a treat and you don't have to fill your bobbins anywhere near as much. Some people say it's expensive but I have a large cone of aurifil that I have been using for a year now and it is still just under half full, and I do a lot of quilting

I am using Aurifil #4060 it is 50/2 and a variegated light,silvery,gray-green that randomly changes to pale off-white and blends in so well with everything that good luck trying to remove stitching(the thread and the 301A perfect stitch).
...measure/check three times, sew once

p.s. same thread top and bobbin "life is too short to use inferior thread"

I'm using up all the light colors in my thread collection. They are getting old and its a good way to rotate the inventory. Its amazing that anything on the pastel side of the color range blends really well with the color your sewing on, much better than a stark white. Exception of course is the black.

Laughing because of some earlier comments about neutral fabrics. I went with strictly black and white which is out of the box for me...I usually do creams and tans. Here I have been wishing I had gone with those! Either way, these quilts will be fantastic. I think my "best" quilts have been Bonnie MQs! :-)
