I don't know where I got the idea that it was cheap.
DH and I use Uber often when we visit larger cities and find it very convenient. It is cheaper (and easier in MHO) than hailing a cab...especially busy time in NYC. Watson is right that the rates fluctuate during peak times or in high volume areas. When we were in DC once, we found out that if we walked a couple blocks off the Main Street in Georgetown, the price dropped...I guess it was easier for he Uber driver to pick us up at a quieter location. They say tip is included in the fare but like you, we generally give a tip to the driver anyway.

My son-in-law and grandsons were in accident, but a minor one. They weren't hurt and their ride was then free, but the poor driver was devastated that his new car was now damaged. I don't know about what kind of insurance is provided these drivers.

And, yes, the tip is included in the fare.

Uber drivers are independent contractors I think, but regardless I've never had a job that required a vehicle where I wasn't responsible for all insurance. And I seriously doubt Uber provides any medical insurance if that was what you mean?

What I know of Uber is Bonnie Hunter's prebooked cab was 1+ hour late to take her to the airport for her Japan flight.

We use Uber and Lyft successfully. We both drive so mainly use it for the drive to the airport. Two fares going and coming usually works out cheaper than the parking lot we use. We don't like taking a shuttle to an offsite lot. We also use it if we are going into town with no good parking. We have never had an issue with a driver/car, etc. Some drivers are chatty in a benign way and some don't talk. One driver had three GPS systems up!

Here is something about being a driver includes insurance talk but doesn't say the minimum coverage required. That may be elsewhere

What I didn't expect was the price- 23.50. For some reason I thought it was a lot cheaper. And I gave him a 5.00 tip, which I wanted to do. So it was almost 30.00

That sounds about right. I have a friend that is an Uber driver. I usually avoid it as it does add up but it is a great way to go especially if you live far away from bus stops. I also try and combine Uber rides with an other person, if we need to be at the same place, so as to share the cost.

When you book your trip, the cost should show up on your phone. We recently had a crazy trip whirlwind trip to NYC. We parked the car and Uber'd everywhere. It was the best money EVER spent.

I really need to tackle my freeway issues. It's hard to go anywhere in Columbus without avoiding them.
But for many reasons I'm glad Uber is around.

In the Uber requirements link, it showed this:
"Your car, whether an accident was your fault or not, is covered up to the cash value of your vehicle after a $1,000 deductible.
Liability for injury or damage to third parties for at least $1 million for a covered claim.

Uninsured or underinsured motorists and hit-and-run accidents for at least $1 million for a covered claim."

The insurance aspect would bother me. My friend drove for Lyft. It was lucrative, but her insurance company required her to increase her coverage at a substantial cost. You are running a "business" and as such need the proper coverage. She stopped driving because the insurance was too expensive. I think this may vary by state and insurance company.

The Lyft coverage also depended on whether she had passengers, or was on her way to or from picking a fare up.

Thank you, mmunchkins. That's good information. Hopefully, Uber keeps up with whether or not their driver's are carrying the required amounts.

Here's an interesting article about Uber and insurance. Something I hadn't thought about is that some insurance companies won't cover Uber drivers since they have personal car insurance and when driving are operating a business. So even if they have the coverage, they won't pay if you are in an accident and end up in the hospital. You'll be on the hook for whatever your insurance company doesn't pay.
