Need help understanding why I don't like to do certain quilts or blocks?

Scrappy - fabric colors thrown together - it makes my mind go bazookalilies...... I can 'tolerate' controlled scrappy. I know I have a bit of OCD - so that may be the issue. However, what works for one doesn't for another, and what works for me may not for others. Quilting is a personal choice in color and design.....yipee!

I went to a BOM last year and every block had a lot of small pieces. I was so tired of that quilt and thought I would never finish. I do like controlled scrappy. A tumbler quilt is a good easy one to do scrappy, combine a solid and a print for every other tumbler. I use the same color solid throughout.

Give me a bag, box, tote or what have you, full of scraps, and I'm a happy camper starting another scrap quilt. I've tried to do a "controlled" quilt, but after a couple of blocks, I gave up. To me, it was really frustrating. I don't like sampler quilts either, just a quilt of scrappy blocks and I'm happy.

There are a gozillion different types of quilts so don't belabor your pretty little mind as to why you have an aversion to "scrappy". It's probably the same reason why some people love orange and others despise it. Don't care for scrappy quilts in the sense of "doing it myself" but that's not to say I haven't seen some I thought were gorgeous. I just personally prefer to work on quilts that are organized with focal, resting places for my eye and not too cluttered with multiple colors .....to each his own .

I can understand where you are coming from. Learning your likes and dislikes is a process. For me, I had to learn to like doing controlled scrappy. (A bit OCD..
I don't care to do total random scrappy. Though I do appreciate the work involved.
There are so many patterns and techniques out there, you can find some you enjoy, and go from there. Have fun!

I think you should accept your own "standards" and not worry about thinking you should do something that is not pleasing to you. You don't "have" to do something that causes you angst just because someone else does it and creates something you think is pretty. This comes under the other thread of "trusting" yourself. Do your thing and don't try to force a square block (your mindset) into a round hole (someone else's mindset)!

I'm similar. I often like other people's scrappies, but can not do them myself. I'm too OCD to just pick random scraps in hopes they go together. My biggest success was making a Turning Twenty or Yellow Brick Road with 20 coordinating fabrics from the same fabric bundle. That is about as scrappy as I get. Do what you like and makes you happy.

Unless you are in a class or are making a commission quilt, create what speaks to you, makes your heart sing, and forego the other styles, colors, designs, and fabrics. There will be plenty to keep you happy for years and years!
