I'm like you! I buy what I can afford whether it be Walmart fabric's or the thrift shops. As far as pressing the seams I just go with what feels right on each quilt.
I'm sure your quilts are beautiful!

    Me too!

Ditto: GOD bless you. You also need to take care of yourself.
Too much stress in the world to worry about the quilt police. I know that your quilts are made with love and are loved by those that have them. Hugs BrendaK

Never fear, you are indeed a quilter, and more like most of us than the few fanatics. You know, we talk about the quilt police and we assure the insecure that QP don't exist. But some people need rules and structure, they will have their QP at all costs. And there are always a few people who are glad to fill that role. In my mind's eye I seem to remember seeing some of your work on this board (applique, I believe) and remember it being wonderful.
Your plate is more than full, enjoy the times quilting brings you some peace and quiet.

But, after having quilted for many years and many, many quilts I am depressed to find that I am not much of a quilter. I always thought quilting was for the love of it not perfection. I don't have a fancy machine, I have problems with my 1/4 inch seam, I don't prewash, I use what thread I have, I use what fabric I can afford, and I am always confused with which way to press a seam. So you can see I don't do much of anything right. Sure hope Charisma can quilt the Snake River log cabin I sent to her. But I just thank God that I can enjoy quilting because I love it. I am a caregiver for my 87 yr old brother, my 76 yr old husband and my 56 year old son. It is an outlet for me. I thank God for it. Love all of you on the board. God bless
    You're not doing anything "wrong".

I don't have a fancy machine. I still sew on the cheap Singer that my mom bought for me in high school when I took a sewing class.

I don't have that fancy little 1/4" foot so I mark all my seam allowances.

I do pre-wash, but I use whatever fabric I happen to like as long as it isn't threadbare and I sometimes press my seams *gasp* open.

I got depressed looking at this board once, too. At the time I didn't have the funds to really quilt or the time to do it so I'd maybe get to finish one quilt a year. But others would be churning out a quilt every few months. It got me down that I wasn't getting more quilts done and I didn't feel like I was a real quilter, but others told me otherwise. Its not about how many quilts you get done in the year, what kind of machine you use and how expensive it is, what quality of notions and fabrics you buy, or how extravagant your quilts are. Quilting is about enjoying it and it comes from the heart. :)

Grann of 6, making mistakes can turn out to be so much fun... reminds me of an incident about 40 years ago when I was in college... sitting across the table (during break) from a very handsome male co-student and me trying to be so poised while I was so nervous... well I went to take a sip of my coke and missed my mouth... the coke pouring down the front of my shirt... oh my gosh... but the male said (and how I loved him for it): dont worry not being perfect is much more interesting. I will never forget that ... and have taken that with me 40 years now. Keep on quilting and enjoy! Thanks Grann for the reminder.

I think you should just keep doing what you are doing! We all quilt/sew for different reasons. If it makes you happy, who cares what the quilt police say? I think quilts embody your heart and love...who doesn't appreciate that? I've stopped comparing my quilts. I will never be "perfect" and that's just fine with me. I am who I am and that's all that I am...the quilting queen! Long live the queen!
