That looks like aluminum rot, which is bad news. Now for someone who wants to repaint, it's not a bad deal.
I couldn't see a bobbin case - so that would be an extra expense if it's missing.

I just figured it was poison ivy since it is also all over the yard. There was even a vine of PI growing in the living room window. See my blog. If I could I would sew - too much misery. LOL
Miriam, having worked for the county's noxious weed dept. (hence the name weedwoman) I know that roundup (which is a trade name and you can get generic cheaper, it's called glyphosate) but we had ppl deal with PI and they had to spray with Tordon, which is a restricted chemical, and then they had to cut the PI and treat the stumps to totally get rid of it. Talk to your local extension agent or to your county noxious weed man and see what they recommend to help you out.
The only way I know to kill poison ivy plants is to cut the vines to the ground and then soak the stumps with old gasoline. Wear old pants, long sleeved shirt and gloves and don't smoke while pouring on the gasoline. Do NOT burn the vines as the smoke from the burning carries the PI oil around on the breeze. Most of the commercial weed killer preps are so weak that they wouldn't hurt a fly so don't waste your money. As we live in the country we have learned where the PI is most prevalent and steer clear of those areas. Dogs are not allowed off-leash because you just know that they'll find a patch and roll in it, bringing the oil back on their coats. What always surprised me was that the horses would eat the plants while we would be out trail riding and never have after effects .... yuk!
We for sure have to do something about all the poison weeds. There is about a half acre - I think there was just grass when we bid on the house.... I've wondered about getting a herd of goats for a while.

The picture showing where the bobbin case should be is so dark that its hard to see much of anything.

I have no idea. My daughter found this and thought I would enjoy since I like to garden. I thought some folks here would enjoy also!

If you need a bobbin case, they have one listed now on eBay too, 2 days to go, currently at $18.50:

Miriam; Goats might do the trick and they're mostly eco-friendly except that they eat everything. If there's something you want to save, do so before goats arrive. :) Ask me how I know!

My DD has some goats for milking. She says in the spring we can have all the billy goats we want. We will have to contain them - The fence isn't secure all the way around - a few cattle panels might help. There is a little barn we haven't looked into yet. It is surrounded by weeds. We will have to surround some big trees with fencing to keep the goats from killing them too. The yard has something coming up and blooming all summer long. Someone was a gardener. The trouble is the poison ivy and Virginia creeper is in the mix. We have learned to keep soap handy and use it when we are there.

Is there a poison ivy or a Virginia creeper quilt block pattern? Maybe free motion the edge...

Oh I have to tell you all about why my DGD said... They keep goats for milking. Every spring they have kid goats. Well, DD told the girls that they would keep the female goats for milking but the males would be turned into tasty sausages and they could eat them. This was so they wouldn't get attached I guess. Well, DD is pregnant. I got a call from DGD, "Grandma, the doctor taked a picture of Momma's belly. Do you know there was a baby boy in there? But we aren't going eat Momma's baby boy." DD had to xplain that one in a hurry...
