It's the piece that serves as the driver between the treadle platform and the drive wheel. In the older machines it was made out of wood and in the later ones it was iron. In the picture it's the wooden rod on the right.

(Picture is confusing because 3 treadles are lined up in my garage awaiting attention.)

Look how the pitman attaches to the pedal, it has the socket for the metal pitman arm. The wooden pitman arm has a different way of attaching to the pedal.

The 127's had their bobbin winders set high on the arm where the 27's had them low on the pillar.

Thank you for the info. I checked my machine and mine is Iron.
Do I need to oil the iron, how do I care for it? Kathie

Its the metal oval that the serial number is stamped in like this one here.

Yes Kathie you need to oil or use sewing machine grease on all the moving parts of the treadle.

I oil/grease (with sewing machine grease) the moving parts of the treadle and clean it with Liquid Gold. The Liguid Gold really shines up the irons on the treadle and it is good for the pitman if you have the wood pitman.

Here is a picture of my Model 127 Sphinx born in 1913. The Pitman is a little medal rod.
