I don't understand because I thought all machines made after 1900 started with a letter?
Anyway, I am glad I sent in the pictures -- I was pretty wowed when you said it was from 1879!

The Singer serial numbers do not apply to this machine these were carry overs from Wheeler and Wilson. When Singer started to use theirs they put a W in front of them but there are no records left in the Singer archives of these machines. Chrys Gunther more than likely owns these records now. But I know my machine is a 1910.

Hi. I saw a Freeman No5 treadle sewing machine for sale at a thrift store for $65, does that sound like a good deal? It is in a cabinet, treadle is inside. The tag on it says "parts and manual" are w/it. Guessing that is the belt. When I spin the wheel it moves freely so I think it would work, however I do not know what to look for as far as the bobbin is concerned etc. I looked around the net and here is a picture of it, however, the one I saw says Freeman No 5 on the top, not just Free.

So, should I race back up there a get this machine? If so are there things I should check before buying? DH says I can get it if I will use it, so it has to work :). It looked to be in good condition, cabinet too, just needs a little cleaning.
Thanks

Thanks! There is some silvering of the bed decals, but it couldn't be helped unless I just did nothing. The jappaning is all cracked and I am guessing the shellac was damaged. They used some kind of gunk to even oil the tension discs. They were all stuck together.
